Can't we all freely listen to what we want to?
 

And when will people realize music is a subjective experience and just because you like something doesn't mean everybody else will like it. What made me make this thread is a situation that happened in park couple of days ago.

5 days ago in park 3 of those "im so hard cause I listen to black/death metal" pussies with long girly hair walked up to me and my friend and started bull****ting us cause I was having Limp Bizkit t-shirt and my friend was having SlipKnot t-shirt. One of them had "Mayhem" t, another "Deicide" and third one wasn't wearing a shirt of a band. "Deicide" guy came up to me and said "Limp Bizkit is for ***gots and Durst sucks listen to some real metal". I said :"What, like some girly long-haired wanna-be-hard emo pussies nobody knows or cares about "? He got pissed off and started talking how they sing about death and torture and are so badass and NOT emo, I started laughing and said "woow you must be so hardcore then, means you are a real badass and you kill and torture people right?" He had no answer to that but then he spoke again changing the subject, saying "Limp Bizkit has rap influences, meaning you like Soulja Boy and Lil Wayne too ha? And you think they're harder yeah?". I replied:"dude, get your facts straight Soulja Boy and Lil Wayne are **** and not rap, REAL rap is stuff like Tupac, Eminem, Eazy E etc and FYI at least most real rappers are from hood/ghetto and they've seen more violence and death than you and most other poserish sub-urban wanna-be-hard bands you listen to have". Then he, having no more arguments said "get off the swing", I said "no we were here first", he replies "why don't you go listen to your terrible douchebag music, douchebag" I said "why don't go you suck satan's cock?", then he lost control and tried to hit me(which is a bad idea since I go to gym regularly and train kickboxing), I dodged his punch and elbowed him in mouth, breaking some of his teeth and making him bleed hard also knocking him onto the ground. My friend also got ready for a fight, but other 2 of his friends ran away while he tried to get up while screaming" PLEASE LEAVE ME ALONE PLEASE", I let him go, then he got up, pulled himself together and ran away too.

Me and my friend discussed it and we are wondering a couple of things.

First of all, how much of a stuck up, complexed, narrow-minded whiny insecure **** do you have to be to bother somebody because he listens to a different music genre than you?

Second, how can you think that listening to a certain type of music can make you hard? It won't make your muscles stronger, it won't give you fighting skills, it won't make you braver, so stop being delusional and get back to real world, if you wanna be hard you gotta do some hard physical and mental training, not act like a stuck up conservative elitist bitch. For ****S sake, my dad, retired badass police officer who has seen more violence and death and been in more fights than all death/metal band members together(not that 0 is hard to beat LOL) listens to our country's classic rock bands(which aren't aggressive at all)

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against people listening to that kind of music - everybody is free to do as he wants as long as he doesn't endanger other's freedom. That means if you want to think you are hardcore, sure go ahead, THINK it but to say **** in my face is a threat to my freedom and somebody may knock the **** out of you if you do it while not hiding behind the screen.

Third, how can HE call ME a douchebag? I mean from the whole situation and who provoked who I think we can clearly see he is a douchebag, but is he really that blind/stupid that he thinks he was right?

Fourgth, why do you think they even walked up to us, did they really think they can kick our asses? Admittedly, the "Deicide" guy who attacked me was a bit bigger than me, but mostly cause of his fat, he wasn't very muscly and by his movements I don't think he ever trained any martial art

So, what's your opinion on this whole situation? I shared this story with people in my class, ofc rap listeners were delighted but why did some metal heads got hurt? I mean, I wouldn't EVER attack somebody for their music taste, I was the ATTACKED ONE and some took me for a villain :confused:.

Music is subjective, but there's an element of relativity to it. If the amount of music you've listened to is small in scope, perhaps just one genre, or perhaps a few popular artists of a few genres, then you haven't had the exposure to the sheer quantity and quality of music available, and can't know what you're missing. Don't settle. Keep exploring. You'll soon find thousands of new impressive things, and you will reflect upon the entry-level artists perhaps kindly, or perhaps with a bit of shame, but they are not the end of what is available to you.

I remember when this started happening in the So. Cal Punk scene and it happened surprisingly fast; that 'I'm Punker than you because I listen to XYZ' mentality. Especially funny because Punk was all about alienation and not fitting in. I've said it before here - once a bunch of people get together and form a group, no matter how disenfranchised they were to begin with, they almost immediately become elitest pricks and start looking for other people they can persecute for being different. Some people are just weak, stupid assh*les and I don't think there is anything you can do about it.

Yes, ultimately the whole scenario is nonsense, and you've got some very good ideas about subjectivity and whether or not your peers are idiots, but while you're here on MB, I would welcome and encourage you to keep looking for music to love. We're a great resource and all we ask for is an open mind.

I personally think, Yes but if your listening to your own type of music to not have it too loud enough that it disturbs other people.

In another case that your wearing clothing i.e. T-shirt or a Top of your favourite band or artist then your free to do so, as long as its not offensive then you have the freedom to totally ignore them shouting at you.

Wear what you feel comfortable in, I say!

You whole post reads like a passive aggressive bully's recollection of a antagonizing confrontation and being confused about the results of their method to solve the problem by throwing fuel on the fire. It's like when Fred Durst whined about being sensitive and misunderstood while continuing to front hard and act like a dick.

I used to get people calling me f@ggot to my face on a regular basis for wearing RHCP shirts back in the day. The most effective comebacks - 'So..., meh, or whatever'. What can they say to that? When you've proved you give absolutely no sh!ts about their opinion with your reply you effectively remove any opportunity for them to create a confrontation.

Also... someone calling you out on listening to cheesy rap metal is a threat to your freedom? Who's the insecure one here?

Heh. I remember two kids teasing me for wearing a RHCP shirt, then a few months later "Under the Bridge" became a huge hit and one of those two dopes was suddenly wearing a RHCP shirt himself.

I have a story to tell...When I was at High School, the Library had a day diaplaying Music (of course most of it was of the time, 1984). Someone was complaining and having a vocal fit that his AC/DC bandana was near my Big Country record - detailing, it was the 2 disc UK edition of "Wonderland." Yeah, it was that pathetic. I have a feeling that elsewhere in the world, both bands were seen as the same, Good down to earth Rock and Roll (True, with BC, it had more depth, but you know what I mean), but in the US, Big Country were seen as "New Wave." (I may be a little wrong, but that was how I saw it.) It's stupid how a genre name and how the company promotes a band changes everything.

I've just started college/training course and, where I live, there is hardly any judgement on peoples appearance.
