the biggest challenge in that situation is not applying the odd style to a slightly different way of playing a rock song but getting over the attitude that applying an odd style to a slightly different way of playing a rock song has to be complex or challenging. it's a common failing with so many amateur musicians, the physical ability is rarely the true limiting factor.
I see what you are saying. Even with Oysterhead, while Anastacio is soloing Claypool is playing the same complex lines in the background--the mix is just toned down several notches. He has and always will play his same percussive style, and there is a lot to like and a little--for the harshest of critics --to dislike. But it's what Claypool fans want.

It's one thing that makes him very different from Flea. I personally feel Claypool has more ability to pack a punch in his lines. But what makes Flea a great musician is that he has adapted to so many different styles, not just with his different projects, but within RHCP itself.

I think Les is overdue for a reinvention anyways, especially with the dissapointment that was his latest disc...

This is like asking "German chocolate cake or Dutch apple pue?". They're both good but totally different.

Weird comparison, but totally Flea. No offense to Entwistle.

Would personally say Flea. He's got that energy and groove. He's a great live player, very adventurous on the stage and will pop a little fill in every now and then that makes you go mmm.

He's not six feet under yet, so I guess he can still do all this.

I would choose John. I'm not even big The Who fan, but Entwistle is in my top 3 when it comes to playing abilities.
Only Paul McCartney and Carol Kaye are better, in my opinion. Also Sting and Bill Wyman both are very close to be better than John, but I have never realized the reason why Flea is so overrated.
