In Utero 20th Anniversery

Did you guys know that it's the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's album, In Utero? I only just got the album sent to me by a friend, but I've listened to it. I really like it but sometimes the noise can get a bit annoying. What do you guys think?

I think I must be fucking old. I still somehow think of it as Nirvana's new album. And their best.

RockNRoll 08-13-2013 06:09 PM

It's not their best album, but when the competition is Nevermind, don't expect to take gold. This album was actually really well written in my opinion, especially compared to the rest of their catalog.

I was on their mailing list at the time.

I remember they sent me a poster advertising Pennyroyal Tea as the forthcoming single a couple of weeks before Cobain died.
I think I still have it, I wonder if it's worth anything seeing the single was withdrawn.

bob. 08-17-2013 12:17 PM

yeah....in all honesty i would say yes to that.....that single is very hard to find and worth quite a bit....i'm sure anything having to do with it would be worth something

Black Francis 08-17-2013 01:09 PM

Their best album imo

one of the few albums that cover art reflects the sound of the album
such a well produced album too.. the guitar sounds great and the drums sound amazing! Albini did his thing..

the sound reminds me a little of the surfer rosa album by the pixies it has like a raw refined sound to it that is very loud and powerful

That would be worth a lot. I went to a record store and they had a poster advertising a show that would've taken place after Cobain died, and the poster had been distributed just before he passed away. I'm pretty sure its worth was nearly up to $1000. I thought that was insane.

Urban Hat€monger ? 08-17-2013 05:31 PM

I'm not sure it'll get that much.
A few promo copies of the single came out in the UK before it was withdrawn and they go for around £100

Aw really? Fair enough. Maybe our memorabilia is so pricey because Australia is in the middle of nowhere...

Black Francis 08-17-2013 05:58 PM

This reminds me of my childhood friend who use to buy all the nirvana singles just for that one extra song..

tracking all their rarities and bootleg albums and it was so hard to track them back in the early 90's because the internet hadn't really exploded back then and some cds were hard as sh*t to hunt down..

Im not a collector myself so i don't care for buying the in utero cd again for sentimental reasons, i feel i don't need to..
neither do i care much for celebrating the anniversary of one of their albums or Kurt's death for that matter..

i don't need to buy their re-released songs that i already know for nostalgia reasons because i still know them by heart..

Plus i just saw the track listing and i think they missed a few rarities

I couldn't remember how this went so I went to youtube. Its kind of funny what passed for legit lyrics then. If anyone had written that today, I would have no time for it.

Its also odd that such irreverent lyrics and wholly crushing depression took hold that strongly with the young kids. I mean, its weird to think that many people signed up to be depressed.

Had to be there I guess.

I'm on my time with everyone
I have very bad posture

I sit and drink Pennyroyal Tea
Distill the life that's inside of me
I sit and drink Pennyroyal Tea
I'm anemic royalty

Give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld
So I can sigh eternally

I'm so tired I can't sleep
I'm anemic royalty
I'm a liar and a thief
I'm anemic royalty

I'm on warm milk and laxatives
Cherry flavored antacids

I sit and drink Pennyroyal Tea
Distill the life that's inside of me
I sit and drink Pennyroyal Tea
I'm anemic royalty

In fairness it was replacing this sort of thing...

Swingin' on the front porch
Swingin' on the lawn
Swingin' where we want
'Cause there ain't nobody home
Swingin' to the left
And swingin' to the right
If I think about baseball
I'll swing all night yea

Swingin' in the living room
Swingin' in the kitchen
Most folks don't 'cause
They're too busy bitchin'
Swingin' in there 'cause
She wanted me to feed her
So I mixed up the batter
And she licked the beater

I scream you scream
We all scream for her
Don't even try 'cause
You can't ignore her

She's my cherry pie
Cool drink of water
Such a sweet surprise
Tastes so good
Make a grown man cry
Sweet cherry pie oh yea
She's my cherry pie
Put a smile on your face
Ten miles wide
Looks so good
Bring a tear to your eye
Sweet cherry pie

Swingin' to the drums
Swingin' to guitar
Swingin' to the bass
In the back of my car
Ain't got money
Ain't got no gas
But we'll get where
We're goin' if we
Swing real fast

I scream you scream
We all scream for her
Don't even try 'cause
You can't ignore her

She's my cherry pie
Cool drink of water
Such a sweet surprise
Tastes so good
Make a grown man cry
Sweet cherry pie oh yea
She's my cherry pie
Put a smile on your face
Ten miles wide
Looks so good
Bring a tear to your eye
Sweet cherry pie, yeah, pie

Swing it! All night long,
Swing it!
Swingin the bathroom
Swingin' on the floor
Swingin' so hard
We forgot to lock the door
In walks her daddy
Standin' six foot four
He said you ain't gonna swing
With my daughter no more

She's my cherry pie
Cool drink of water
Such a sweet surprise
Tastes so good
Make a grown man cry
Sweet cherry pie oh yea
She's my cherry pie
Put a smile on your face
Ten miles wide
Looks so good
Bring a tear to your eye
Sweet cherry pie
Sweet cherry pie

yeah that was me at 17 :)....i can honestly say that the first Nirvana song i ever heard was the B side to Smells Like Teen Spirit....Even In His Youth

i think it's kind of unfortunate all of this stuff was released on the box set a few years back....save the live show

personally not much of a collector anymore but this makes a great gift for a friend of mine

i have to agree with this also....i mean when i was 17 and this came out it described my state of mind....i suppose....but i honestly can not remember ever being that bummed out

TheBig3 08-18-2013 11:12 AM

@Urban - Which is an improvement, but why depression, I guess is what I'm saying.

@bob. - I was into it, but I was about 11 at the time it came out and I honestly didn't listen to the words. I always assumed bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam were enjoyed by everyone, but they were never anyone's "favorite" band. Don't know why I assumed that, I guess they just didn't inspire a godless passion in me.

I don't know, all these years later the whole time period seems weird to me. OK soda, music videos, Bevis & Butthead, Clueless, baggy clothes...the 90's were one big, failed experiment.

Speaking from a U.S. perspective, even the country seemed to be all over the place. Our politics were insane, riots were all over the place, television became dominated by day-time talk shows, rap went from becoming super-hardcore to selling out about as fast and as hard as any genre to date, the OJ Simpson trial was eternal, and being super depressed was the coolest **** in the world.

Black Francis 08-18-2013 12:28 PM

@Big3

lol i agree, depression was popular in the 90's but it wasn't that bad
and Grunge wasn't the only music around, Green day, No doubt, The Foo fighters, The breeders, all these bands were around in the 90's and they weren't depressive in fact they were the alternative to depressive grunge bands

and speaking of beavis and butthead, did you ever hear this song?

Nirvana - 1993 - I Hate Myself & I Want to Die [Beavis And Butt-head] [vinyl] [HQ Audio] - YouTube

This cd is one of those that my friend had a hard time tracking but thankfully he did and that's why i know this song :)

supposedly there is an opposite ver called 'I love myself i want to live' but i never heard it i think it was just a myth

IvanMC 08-24-2013 12:01 AM

I love prog rock but miss those days a lot. I wonder if I genuinely consider the 90s to have been a marvellous decade or if it is that I'm getting older, hence nostalgic; though I seriously do miss that time and will drink a toast to this album on the spot. What would Kurt be doing nowadays if he was here with all of us?

He'd be dead.

I wonder what his opinion on Foo Fighters would be...

MrNoodle 09-14-2013 10:58 AM

Greetings all, signed up on here a while back but hadn't posted at all.
First post! :)

When In Utero came out I was 22 and in college. After Nevermind, I wondered how they would top that. Then I started hearing all the 'buzz' about this one before it was released and it was all, "oh, it's a huge departure from Nevermind/Kurt wanted to distance himself from all of the success of that one/the record company didn't like it/blah blah blah."

Once I picked it up, I was floored. It WAS hugely different from Nevermind, but THAT's what made it all the more better. Loved the heaviness of it and the furious/rapid vocals, right along with the mournful voice on tracks like Pennyroyal Tea and whatnot.

Definitely one of my favorite albums and in my opinion one of the very few great albums from the so-called 'grunge' area, though I never considered them in that category.

I'm glad they're doing the 20th Anniversary thing on this. I picked up the Nevermind super deluxe version and the Bleach deluxe version when those came out.

Initially I had been interested in the super deluxe as well for this one, but have decided to only pick up the deluxe. Don't need the extra 'live' cd and would much rather have the dvd in its own case. With the Nevermind super, I never really listed to the live cd and it's a bit annoying to take out the entire set just to grab the dvd. Yeah, minor nitpicks, but the $$$ was a factor too.

Anyway, just checked Amazon (though I'm going to pick them up in-store) and checked the deluxe version (about $21) has two discs, which were the only ones I am interested in, and those contain all the tracks on the first two cds of the SUPER deluxe. I'll pick up the Live and Loud dvd with this, and I'll be set. Oh, and the Live and Loud has been on my 'get this damn thing out already' for ages. So spending about $40 on both of these is way better than $120-$140 (whatever the price range will be).

Nickelback_rules 09-15-2013 02:16 AM

I love In Utero..Cobain, the genius inspired the other genius, Chad Kroeger. Thank you, Mr. Cobain.

Heart Shaped Box really molded the Nickelback sound..I can feel the drive right now as I type these awe inspiring words.

Forward To Death 09-15-2013 05:15 AM

If anything, Nirvana sounds like Nickelback. Chad Kroeger's genius is so ahead of it's time that Kurt was writing everything based around what he thought Nickelback's first album would sound like.

How would or can that even be considered "going off topic" I was simply stating through an image that Mr. Cobain has influenced the geniuses known as Scott Stapp and Chad Kroeger.

Forward To Death 09-15-2013 09:44 AM

Oh, I see. I think it would have been more appropriate if you had posted it the Pearl Jam thread, or if you had used a picture that was more than just Scott Stapp with a reference to one of his most popular songs.

What do you think of Staind?

Well, you know how talented and awe inspiring Mr. Stapp is..he really can take you that much higher, no pun intended.

Staind have always been looking to replicate the Nickelback sound and image..it's painfully obvious. 'It's Been A While' is a rip off of 'Hero' Aaron Lewis couldn't tie Chad Kroegers shoes..

Hey Courtney, what's up? It's nice to know that you still visit the local pharmacist.

Nirvana have been an influence on Nickelback, for their whole career span, I'm speaking on behalf of Mr. Kroeger and the rest of his colleagues..when I say, thank you Mr. Cobain. Thank you.

Creed are the furthest thing from being "sucked" Creed are the magnet of the Music industry, every band stepped their game up when Creed arrived on the scene, and everyone knows it.

It's common knowledge among everyone in the Nickelback camp that Staind lived in Canada in the mid to late 1990's in order to replicate the Nickelback sound. It's painfully obvious.

Those are some great points. I mean, Creed forced bands like Shinedown and Godsmack to really step up their game. That's pretty impactful, man. Creed is like totally the magnet of suckitude.

Shinedown and Godsmack? You are leaving out the Black Keys, Jack White/The White Stripes, Frank Ocean and the Dillenger Escape Plan. Creed do not "suck" They blow..crowds away, every single night. Please, correct yourself next time. Thank you.

Yes, Staind were Canadian residents at one point..they were at every little club that Nickelback performed at, they deserve to give Chad and the crew all of their money obtained from all of those years. No problem, guys.

Even though they had their breakthrough hit 2 full years before Nickleback did, sure, they definitely owe something to Nickleback. It was Nickleback's idea to cash in on being Canadian and awful I suppose.

Jack White blatantly steals from Nickelback, how can you not realize that? Nickelback are Canadian but they're not awful, oh and as for the second statement/quote...nice, take my words out of context and spinning it. Typical Nickelback hater..
