Stoner/Desert Rock and Metal

Per a devious request... post that sh!t here.

I'll start with a song/band I've been pretty obsessed with lately.

jackhammer 08-22-2014 07:07 PM

How this band didn't make it I will never know :(

Carpe Mortem 10-07-2014 04:03 PM

Full album now on youtube as of yesterday, makes you want a fleet of motorcycles and a fifth of whiskey. Blowing Electric Wizard's new one out of the water.

Also finally listened to Earth's new one, and it's mindblowingly ****ing fantastic. Plus cool ass cover art.

Ancestors for me lately. First Light from In Dreams & Time may be my favourite track in the entire genre.

Cant really believe how this thread has so few answers. Just made my account now to start bumping this, i hope.

Well, since is my nowadays favorite types of metal, i would add:

Kyuss (ofc)
Hermano
Rainbows Are Free
Been Obscene
Valley of The Sun
Sasquatch
Year Long Disaster
Kadavar
Stubb
Slo Burn
The Kings of Frog Island
Radar Men From The Moon
Baroness
Stoned Jesus
Vista Chino
Colour Haze
Brain Police
Dead Meadow
Witch
Roadsaw
Red Octopus
Black Pistol Fire
My Sleeping Karma
The Black Angels

But really gotta dig up Earthless (already mentioned in this thread) and Black Bombaim. Earthless is by far the best, imo.

My list includes many different genres, from psychedelic rock to stoner, and i believe most of the bands you already know. Anyway, glad if i can bring something new and contribute to make this thread longer!

Lu-Cuss 10-31-2014 06:19 PM

I really like southern style stoner metal more than the traditional style from bands like Sleep or Electric Wizard. Bands like Weedeater and Bongzilla or Mountain Goat are good examples which I can't link quite yet.

DeadChannel 12-17-2014 09:53 PM

I enjoy Kyuss and qotsa, but I need to go deeper into the genre.

Acid King is among the heaviest bands I've heard in all of metal. They're close to death/doom, Coffins-level heaviness, but they got that psychedelic feel too. Just imagine Jimi Hendrix playing "Machine Gun" only at sludge and drone-ish, slow doom tempos and with 4x as much distortion.
Anyway, Busse Woods is a must have, though their early EPs are worth checking out too:

I keep editing this, but I wanted to add "Tank," because that one is monstrous.

this thread needs a major bump.

wheres the Truckfighters. Dozer. Clutch. Greenleaf. Warchief. Churchhouse Creepers. Egypt. All them Witches. Child.

if youre looking for more stoner rock. Stoned Meadow of Doom or Stoned Ravenous Fuzz on the utube. Smod is very active posting new music. many new bands out there. especially in this style of rock.

undertow 02-29-2016 12:54 AM

Palm Desert. Spaceslug. Spaztik Munkey. Instant Boner. Dope Smoker. Wo Fat. Sasquatch.

jackhammer 03-05-2016 05:09 PM

this Palm Desert album is amazing desert rock, very rare in my opinion.

#6,4,9,2,1 are the top end of this album to me

I'll be damned if Radiant Moon by Watchtower doesn't hit the spot.

I just saw these guys open for Earthless. One of the few occasions when the opening act turned out to be every bit as good as the headliner.

Elder "Compendium" LIVE in PDX

radiantriad 03-20-2016 08:42 PM

Greek band Tuber does a pretty good job of capturing that "desert" sound, in my opinion. Their album Desert Overcrowded is pretty solid. First track (title track) is what I recommend

Neapolitan 03-20-2016 09:01 PM

I haven't really gone through the genre. I only know a few. The bands I am more interested in are Nebula, Radio Moscow, Wo Fat and Truckfighter.

Nebula - Carpe Diem (Official Video)

Radio Moscow - I Just Don't Know

Wo Fat - "Beggar's Bargain"

Truckfighters - Desert Cruiser

undertow 03-21-2016 12:52 PM

ive seen Elder pushed by a guy on a utube discussion recently. will have to check out the hype.

if you want to really experience truckfighters, Manhattan Project and Gweedo Weedo are the tracks to get into off that album.

I got to see them live. Obvious comparison to make to Ali Farka Toure.

Good stuff.

thats some good stuff. i need lyrics though, idk why, just doesnt grab me without.

there is a band called Weedruid that is instramental with audio clips thrown in instead of a singer. something different if youre interested.

They sound a bit more on the slower, "doom" side than the stuff I usually listen to.

This is the first song I've heard by them so far...

Lots of heavy fuzz going on there!

I'll have to give the rest of the album a listen.
