Moshing is so played out. I would love to just sit in peace and space out on the tunes.

That's the way our band is, but we have a few heavy parts. I think the increase in doom/stoner metal bands will facilitate that change to a more trance-like atmosphere for metal shows.

I like a lot of Metal and its various sub-genres but to narrow my favourite Metal albums down to ten would be impossible, so I'll just do a top 10 favourite albums for one of Metal's sub-genres for now.

Death Metal (and its various off-shoots, in no particular order)

Demilich - Nespithe
Lykathea Aflame - Elvenefris
Thorium - Ocean of Blasphemy
Death - Symbolic
Kalmah - They Will Return
Atheist - Piece of Time
Bolt Thrower - Those Once Loyal
Gire - Gire
Dismember - Like an Ever Flowing Stream
Dissection - Reinkaos

Here's the new one. It is bound to change as well.
  • Dopesmoker by Sleep - My favorite album ever.
  • Among the Living by Anthrax - Chugging metal that is also catchy.
  • Master of Puppets - The riffs for "Damage Inc." are incredible, and "Master of Puppets" and "The Thing That Should Not Be" are two of my most beloved metal songs ever.
  • Variations on a Theme by Om - Drone, psychedelic stoner metal that is absolutely perfect.
  • Lost Paradise by Paradise Lost - I've tried to get over this album, but I can't. It sounds like it was made to be played in a medieval dungeon.
  • Reign In Blood - A mainstay of any extreme metal listener.
  • Human by Death - Chugging, production, guitar tone, vocals, every aspect of this is great. It goes all over the place, sometimes too much, but the guitar tone always makes the weird tangents interesting.
  • Don’t Break the Oath by Mercyful Fate - Possibly the most well-rounded metal album ever. Few people can resist this.
  • Slaughter in the Vatican by Exhorder - Brutal thrash metal.
  • This Place Where the Dead Speak with the Living by Annimal Machine - Indie sludge metal that is very difficult to find anything wrong with.
Spoiler for Albums that didn't make it:
  • The Road Less Traveled by Penance
  • Relentless [Pentagram’s self-titled debut]
  • Dopethrone
  • Rust in Peace
  • None So Vile
  • British Steel
  • Tales by Zion's Abyss
  • Age of Winters
  • Catharsis by Y.O.B.
  • Lysol by the Melvins
  • Master Control by Liege Lord
  • The Years of Decay
  • Satan Worshipping Doom
  • Heavy Rocks [original]
  • Vinterskugge by Isengard

Thanks Wpnfire. Some of those I did already feature, so if you want to change Slayer and Metallica, Death and Mercyful Fate if I pick your list to be considered for Metal Month III.

Anyone else who wants to get their top ten in go right ahead. Speaking of which .... (look up)

My OP:

I'd like to feature this in Metal Month II if possible. Just list your top ten metal albums --- of any/every subgenre --- in order from ten to one. If you want to write a little about why they're so good you're welcome, but all I really want is a list so I can tabulate, add up and see what are considered overall the top ten Heavy Metal albums of all time. I'll then review them next month in reverse order.

Okay .... Go!

It didn't work, mostly down to my naivete about some of the more obscure (to me) metal albums, but we ended up getting people to write their own lists and three of them were featured in MM II last year, and another three will be picked this year.

I was actually thinking of using that for the Torture Chamber. Surely you can think of something almost as heinous.
