Actually i don't, saying a album is the best doesn't convince me. Doesn't it make the best just because Rolling Stone Magazine said so?

Urban Hat€monger ? 12-07-2014 07:26 PM

Ok so which ones would you take out, what would you replace them with, why would you replace them with those?

ladyislingering 12-07-2014 07:27 PM

Though I enjoy Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, I can't think of any particular reason it even made this list at all, let alone topped it.

In my opinion The Stranger should be a lot higher, as it's one of the more beautifully produced, lush-sounding albums on the list. It could just be that I love the album and think it's perfect, ...but it's still a prettier listen than most of the albums (specifically The Joshua Tree and Nevermind - are you kidding me?) listed before it.

Rolling Stone magazine is trash.

Penehoff 12-07-2014 07:33 PM

Ok here is my problem with the whole list, i understand because most of all these albums date back over the past 40 to 50 years but honestly i do believe that there has been some truly marvelous albums written within the past 5 to 10 years. I do believe the Beatles and the Ramones do deserve to be on that last but the rest i seriously think they could be debated as mediocre.

something tells me you probably haven't heard the majority of this list.

William_the_Bloody 12-07-2014 07:58 PM

No I don't agree with the list, in general I think a lot of people feel that Rolling Stone magazine has lost its credibility on making judgments on such matters.

Here's a good example as to why?

69 - Led Zeppelin 4
87 - The Wall

8 - London Calling
33 - Ramones

and the Ramones before the Sex Pistols? bollocks!

My point exactly , Rolling Stone has turned more concern with selling then actually given reasonable thought to their own opinions.

Key 12-07-2014 08:02 PM

Are you really looking to discuss this list as if it means anything at all? Rolling Stone have been and will probably continue to put out top 100 lists that are so generic and easy to predict, that you could take this list, and it'd be pretty much exactly like the next top 100 list they're going to release.

or much worse , adding Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus to that list

Necromancer 12-07-2014 08:58 PM

Pink Floyd, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols.

Really?

No mention of Frank Zappa who has over 50 albums under his belt like, Zoot Allures, Joe's Garage and Overnight Sensation.
Only 48 more albums to choose from by Zappa alone.

Exactly .. I think they need to have a panel of 50 people voting on the best albums.

That would just make it even more generic.

Penehoff 12-07-2014 10:27 PM

Not if you stick them all in a room and they listen to thousands of albums through the last 70 years and then vote on which albums is the top 100

You're right. Let's write Rolling Stone and tell them of this ultra-realistic method of making a list.

Penehoff 12-07-2014 10:34 PM

Oh i know its not realistic but its what would have to happen to have some accuracy on that list

Necromancer 12-07-2014 10:41 PM

I think the peoples choice might produce more realistic results.

Machine 12-07-2014 11:49 PM

Rolling Stone is just a bone headed magazine that no one should take seriously, this list is exactly what I expected. Only put in classic revered albums because why would anyone want to see anything else, oh it would be such an outrage if something somewhat unknown made it on. The list represents the magazine absolute trash!

Sorry I get overzealous about these kinds of things sometimes, but I hate people who worship classic things for the sake of them being classic.

Zhanteimi 12-08-2014 12:50 AM

^What should I take seriously?

Pet_Sounds 12-08-2014 06:19 AM

I think Rolling Stone probably made a calculated business decision based on the demographic of their subscribers.

Machine 12-08-2014 07:57 AM

The pandering makes it no less boneheaded

Nostalgia industry, mate. I've got nothing to back it up, but I'm guessing most of Rolling Stone's subscribers are Baby Boomers. It's still a crappy list, but a smart business decision.

Urban Hat€monger ? 12-08-2014 09:27 AM

Rolling Stone lists tend to be dull. If you want real entertainment read the NME's lists.

I would assume that these old folks (I don't really like that term for some reason but it fits) who actually enjoy music would be even more passionate about busting this ****ty list. They've been around a bit longer and had more time to listen to half a million different things.

jazzpig 12-14-2014 09:20 PM

These lists are for the musically simple minded.
How do you rate one at 16 as opposed to 21, what's the criteria?
More to the point, what for, other than commercial ends.
Different genres, different eras, different demographic appeal....these lists are absolutely meaningless.
