truth be told ozzy and bruce they were too much talented , from female siouxsie sioux they re all come from england!!

p86 04-03-2015 03:23 PM

freddy could sing every different kind of music , dont forget queen had disco hits as well

BloodFoxTK 04-04-2015 08:44 AM

if i absolutely had to pick, it would definitely be Freddy Mercury!

that man was truly amazing.

Chula Vista 04-04-2015 09:15 AM

Yup, FREDDIE was incredible.

thesienna 04-05-2015 05:28 AM

Glen Benton for me in terms of death metal

gsrox 04-10-2015 05:37 AM

Steve Perry has an outstanding voice. In metal Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden stands in my mind as a front runner.

Brony Militia 04-14-2015 09:13 AM

Ozzy is the MAN!!!

while i disagree that Ozzy is the best, i think it'd be wrong to ignore his obvious talent as a vocalist.

In terms of pure technical ability and emotion I'd throw Jeff Buckley out there during his rockier moments, he makes someone like Mick Jagger look like a drunk bird doing karaoke on a hen night.

Buckley was amazing. Wish he would have reigned it in a bit more at times though. Just becasue you have incredible range doesn't mean you have to use it all the time.

joenorwood77 04-15-2015 04:20 PM

Awesome to see someone put Gordon Gano on this list. LOL

I am surprised to not see Axl Rose anywhere on this thread yet. He may be a jerk, but his range is one of the best ever.

Norg 04-15-2015 04:30 PM

David Bowie

Kyo

Jonathan Davis

but those 2 really wouldn't fall under the ROCK ....... so yeah

Jason1990 04-16-2015 01:25 AM

Technically Axel rose has the best vocal range of all time so he would be classified the best.. But I personally am not a fan of his so my personal view is that Eric Adams is the best :) Singer of Manowar

I like the potential this thread but in order to keep the peace and come up with meaningful outcomes is anyone else in favour of having subcategories for:-

- Technical ability
- Attitude/Stage presence
- Contribution to the genre
- Live performance / consistency

?

"Technical ability"

To quote flight of the conchords, be more constructive with your feedbeck.

It's just so meaningless. I mean it's pointless how many notes someone can sing if their music is bad. Like Urban said, you guys can keep talking about how great Freddie Mercury is, but he'd be terrible in the Fall, while Mark E. Smith, one of my favorite vocalists, would be terrible in Queen. The measure of how good a vocalist is has to do with how good they are combined with their music, it has nothing to do with so-called "technical ability".

Jonts 04-16-2015 08:49 AM

I'd agree, so lets look at who's got an awesome voice but no clue how to use it and vice versa

Gotta agree with Sir. Always thought Axl's falsetto was terrible.

Plankton 04-16-2015 09:34 AM

I call him the human mosquito.

FRED HALE SR. 04-16-2015 09:44 AM

Ronnie James Dio.

Journey Steve Perry!

i have to ask, are you saying that someone can't be a good vocalist unless they could fit into and suit another completely unrelated band?

if this is the case, then are there any good vocalists?

as far as i'm aware, very few vocalists can just "fit" into other bands. (example: see how chester bennington ****ed up STP)

Steyn 04-17-2015 07:44 AM

That's a real difficult one. Any singer that can hold a note without using auto-tune is good. Some singers I feel stand out are Bruce Dickinson obviously, Mikael Stanne, Jon Oliva. The list can go on for a while. But those definitely stand out.

As per my some categories I came up with off the top of my head here I would say Bruce gets all of them. I second your notion.

Chula Vista 04-17-2015 07:57 AM

Can anyone post an example of Bruce singing something like this?

there isn't one. mainly because iron maiden don't do songs like this.

why would you even ask for such an example?.

Because if we're talking BEST then versatility should be one of the measuring sticks. A lot of the singers mentioned are great but I'd consider them one trick ponies.

Bruce can do mellow stuff but he's not really good at it IMO.

jammo 04-25-2015 06:31 PM

Jeff Buckley for sure.

Neurotripsicks 05-01-2015 07:14 PM

Ian Astbury

Powerstars 05-03-2015 07:18 AM

Freddie Mercury, even if it's an obvious choice. He just has a great range, and the actual sound of his voice is wonderful.

For some of my personal favorites, you can't go wrong with Brian Bell, and the backing vocals of John Frusciante.

thegaffer 05-13-2015 04:10 PM

James Hetfield

Black Francis 05-13-2015 05:14 PM

Frank Black and let me tell you why, when it comes to versatility he is one of the most diverse singers ive ever heard, he could write you a pop rock hit like Velouria or even a folk hit like Llano del rio and while his voice doesn't have alot of range or is particularly pretty his knowledge as a musician makes up for it and not only that, he created his own signature vocals that weren't based around a refined voice but rather about the mannerisms of language.

The perfect example of those vocals he created is this song.

Now, objectively i recognise he's not the best singer ever but to me he is and it's because like him i wasn't blessed with an angelic voice but he showed me that despite that i can be a good singer if i find my own voice and fearlessly indulge it.

And let me tell you something, im not the only one that recognises this.

You all can disagree with this if you like but me and Bowie know what's up.

Frosth 05-18-2015 01:44 PM

Personally, I love Paul Rodgers, it doesn't matter what mood I'm in, I can always listen to his music. However, of all times - I honestly don't know where to begin. Jon Bon Jovi? Mick Jagger? Roy Wood? Hughie Thomasson? Jim Morrison? John Lennon? Freddie Mercury? Etc. etc.

Even if I could narrow it down right now (or after spending hours doing charts and lists) ask me again in twenty minutes and I'd have to start all over.

However, you can never go wrong with Roger Daltrey.

One of these names really doesn't belong with the others.

Well, I would say "eye of the beholder" but the images that the phrase generates in my mind are more disturbing than I would have thought. Unique, to say the least, just as each and every one of those men are. So, for me, they all really belong because at one point or another, they've influenced my life through music. Hence, depending on the situation, they were great.

Now, if I can get the image of an eyeball shoved into an ear out of my mind (by sharing, apparently), I'll continue to consider them the greats without the very recently accompanying "ear-ball" nausea.

Layne Staley!

Kirk 06-18-2015 02:41 PM

Freddie Mercury. The best singer by far, his range and pure power can never be topped. The lows and highs of his voice, the emotion, and feeling. Never can he be surpassed.

cazpfitl 07-26-2015 01:25 PM

is not my favourite, but i think that Bruce Dickinson will be one of the best ones.
