Best rock singer of all times !! ?

TELL ME :)

I personally LOVE james Hetfield !

And you ?

Josef K 01-19-2015 01:48 PM

This is a really tough question you've posed, Leo. But it's pretty easy for me - my favorite, without a moment's hesitation, is Katy Perry. Shakira is a close second.

(Also, you spelled "Hatfield" wrong.)

So is it about whom one considers to be the best singer, or about one's favourite singer?

+3 in metal.

Mick Jagger is 1st in rock.

Chula Vista 01-19-2015 03:00 PM

Robert Plant > Mick Jagger

Necromancer 01-19-2015 03:04 PM

Robert Plant didn't have half the stage presence as Mick Jagger.
Not including the influence on punk by Jagger.

But were talking about two different eras and styles of rock here, so I also agree Plant is there.

Machine 01-19-2015 03:18 PM

I don't really know if this counts since he had so many genres over the years, but I'll go with David Bowie as my personal favorite not for his stage presence or anything, but just in how his voice makes me feel.

Josef K 01-19-2015 03:20 PM

Okay, my serious answer now: in all of music, my favorite singer is Sam Cooke. Limiting myself to rock, uh, Nick Cave?

One of the best American vocalist for sure.

I think a lot of people miss out on the impact he had on glam and stage appearance.
He ranks up there with Marc Bolan, David Bowie and Elton John.

I would include Alice Cooper, but he falls more in theatrical/opera category.

EPOCH6 01-19-2015 05:45 PM

Chris Cornell.

Necromancer 01-19-2015 05:57 PM

David Coverdale was good with Whitesnake, not very familiar with his Deep Purple days.

Actually, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin were both Blues influenced Hard Rock bands, and they were around in roughly the same time period. Even though the Zep veered towards a heavier sound, and the Stones started earlier, it isn't unreasonable to compare the two bands as peers.

Also, while I love Mick, even I have to admit that his "stage presence" is highly overrated. Robert Plant was just as exciting, and had a powerful range as well. And honestly, there was nothing that Mick did presence-wise that earlier Blues/R&B musicians (and, by extension, Elvis) hadn't already done, and that's not even counting all of the energetic Garage bands that were around at the same time (and who are sadly overlooked).

I understand where your coming from except for Robert Plant as being a better frontman. True, (at one time) they were both popular at the same time.

I personally would be more comfortable comparing the Stones with the Who, verses Zeppelin anyway.

Pete Townshend, is the man.

I could go with John Kay and Steppenwolf.

Its all is still quite subjective, no matter how we look at it.

Oriphiel 01-19-2015 07:23 PM

Sure. Anyway, if we're taking personality and antics into consideration, don't forget about Screamin' Jay Hawkins!

Jim Morrison gives hope to all of us aspiring vocalists who don't have a high voice.

Geoff Tate for Metal.

Bon Scott for Rock.

Thunder 03-12-2015 01:20 PM

The popular opinion is Elvis Presley. I'll go with Jim Morrison (personal preference).

Tell me you wouldn't kill to have a lead singer in your band like Freddie mercury.

Not only does he have the range he has that golden touch that makes songs into anthems, few vocalist can pull that off imo.

Like him or not its pretty hard to deny he was one of the best vocalist in Rock music.

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-12-2015 02:39 PM

There is no best singer.

Mark E Smith can't sing a note, yet you replace him in The Fall with Freddie Mercury or Robert Plant and they would be fucking awful.

Freddie was not only the greatest showman of all time (dude could hold 80,000 in the palm of his hand) but he also the best range and command of his voice. I just happen to like Plant better.

Speaking of Freddie...

Hypnotia 03-14-2015 07:56 AM

Im going to throw a different pebble into the pool here and say, Noddy Holder. Certainly not the best but definitely one of a kind.

Frownland 03-14-2015 03:50 PM

Beefheart's got all the nuances of the great blues singers down without sounding like a copycat (except for Howlin' Wolf a little bit). Plus he's got a four octave range and makes the best music ever made. Hard to not call him the best at this point.

Nah, it's pretty easy. This guy is way up there for me.

Twurtles 03-15-2015 08:38 AM

Obviously Freddie Mercury is up there with the best however some other contenders would be Robert Plant, Kurt Cobain, Marilyn Manson and Gerard Way.

I'll probably get a lot of **** for this post but never mind :D

Adri 03-15-2015 01:53 PM

Chino Moreno from Deftones / Team Sleep / Palms / Crosses !!!

RPM 03-15-2015 02:57 PM

All time favorites, Freddie Mercury, Dennis DeYoung (Styx), Steve Perry, Jon Bon Jovi and currently Myles Kennedy the front man for Alter Bridge and Brent Smith from Shinedown.

When your boy Plant can write and sing a song anywhere near as impressive as Dachau Blues maybe I can take your opinion seriously for once.

That song is really hokey and somewhat ridiculous.

Ridiculous is awesome though. Beef's just got so much variety.
