Still awesomer
Oh, I know Windir, and edited them into my post a bit after initially posting, and before seeing your post. Cor Scorpii, Mistur, and to a lesser extent Sigtyr are all related to Vreid and Windir. Many of those bands' members (not Valfar though; who headed Windir) were originally from the band Ulcus/Ulcus Molle.

I can suggest some catchy entry level stuff for death metal and black metal

Listen to Nile: It's fun and easy to get into, the death growls start sounding almost soothing eventually and the surrounding music is relatively non-threatening and bouncy. And it has some non-Western sounds thrown in for flair. That's Nile's thing. They're a really good band.

Listen to Emperor: Their style is easy to digest. Classic Norwegian black metal sounds with an honest approach and enough technical skill to make it interesting and not too crazy.

Try to listen to entire albums and if you have any interest then listen to those same albums a few times and boom you're into metal.

Nile, entry level? I don't consider technical, ultra-brutal death metal to be entry level. Try some Bolt Thrower instead.

Unfortunately, they don't have anything from the album I'm looking for on Youtube, so I'm using a Grooveshark link to the song I'm look for. Hope that's cool.

Acid Bath - Tranquilized

And if you still don't get what a riff is, it's basically what a rhythm guitarist plays as opposed to lead guitar. It doesn't have to be, but in the context of what I'm giving you it's the repetitive riffs played throughout the song. They form the backbone of the song.
yea.. i sorta get it

the first tune i thought was pretty boring on first listen. i think i can do repetitive riffs but there needs to be some sort of melody to it.

the second song at first i thought was ehh but then toward the end it was pretty good. i like the way it builds the tension up like that.

i enjoyed the melvins song. i think i've actually heard that album before. but never got properly into it. maybe now i will
