Heavy metal is sexist: yay or nay?

There aren't enough women in the heavy metal industry. Maybe they don't get into the genre because they feel threatened? Or feel that they won't be accepted into it? I struggle to list many off the top of my head, Halestorm, Nightwish, Within Temptation... Now I'm out of bands! Is this an issue or are the female- fronted metal bands just less well known? It's definitely a male-dominated genre and this needs to change!

Frownland 04-04-2015 07:51 AM

Metal is super sexy.

BloodFoxTK 04-04-2015 08:02 AM

nay. it would only be sexist if women were prevented from joining the industry.

sure there needs to be more female artists, but nothing is stopping women from joining/forming metal bands.

The Batlord 04-04-2015 08:11 AM

Maybe it's just because women don't really listen to much metal.

Trollheart 04-04-2015 12:35 PM

If metal is too heavy for women to lift, that's their problem. ;)

Except pop and maybe pseudo-Country, ie Country Pop

That's not metal's fault

Only in terms of the singers. When you look at whole bands, I'd say it skews very male across the board.

Frownland 04-06-2015 12:49 PM

Ugly chicks don't sing that well I guess, at least in my experience. The only one that comes to mind is Janice Joplin.

HellCell 04-06-2015 09:12 PM

If it was sexist, women would be banned entirely. Underrepresented is the word you're looking for.

I also want to add that The Agonist got a new hot blonde for a replacement. If she wasn't hot, I'm not sure if the band would stay alive.

Wpnfire 04-06-2015 09:27 PM

Smell the Glove is the best album ever. What's wrong with being sexy?

Just watched that movie today actually.

Finally. Half of the metal section is going to make so much more sense to you now.

Oh I can't wait to reference that movie at every available opportunity to make up for the years I went without seeing it once.

Primeval Scum 04-07-2015 04:21 PM

Isn't like the bassist of Bolt Thrower a woman?

There's also a HUGE number of female fronted goth/symph metal bands.

The only people dumb enough to enjoy the genre so that makes sense.

Indubitably.

Carpe Mortem 04-07-2015 07:15 PM

There are excellent female musicians who don't try to be hot. But agreed, not many. Mainly due to womankind's lack of ability to commit to a hobby in general, not just metal and not just music.

See these badass bitches:

Although I can't think of a good female drummer.

Halestorm isn't metal, first of all. More like a hard rock, alt rock.

But I'd agree that Metal is not sexist. It's a sure bet that some people within the Metal community are sexist, however it doesn't make the genre sexist.

I've witnessed that it's encouraged for more women to take the charge and be in a Metal band. I know I like women in a Metal band.

Huntress is one of my favorite female fronted Metal groups as of late. Got some good songs.

Karen Carpenter's pretty good.

The Batlord 04-08-2015 12:26 AM

Well it's one thing to have a female guitarist, but I imagine you gotta have some arm strength to be any good as a drummer.
