I don't really listen to a lot of newer metal either. Either it's tired death/power/thrash/etc metal that's been irrelevant for at least a decade, if not two, or its from a genre that was dubious to begin with. There's plenty of newer black metal that's legitimately creative, but that's more because it's deviated from the genre to the point of being as much experimental metal as it is genre-based.
I think metal as a whole peaked at the latest in the mid-nineties. You can't really speed it up, or make it any more "brutal" than death metal, black metal, or grindcore, and since making music ever louder was the entire point of metal in the first place, that kind of takes the point out of evolving the genre further.
Now the only way to be original is to turn experimental, and you can't really start a larger movement around bands whose sound can't be replicated.
