Best 90's rock band?

Although the common answer is probably Nirvana, I'd say Red Hot Chili Peppers. But a lot of good material of theirs came out in the 2000's.

Norg 03-07-2016 05:41 PM

Faith no more

OccultHawk 03-07-2016 06:00 PM

Flaming Lips

MJD 03-10-2016 03:37 AM

Among the main public the general answer is probably Nirvana but among music critics and close followers it is certainly Radiohead. Then there is Metallica for the Metal segment, R.E.M. for Indie, Offspring for Punk. There have been many more (Cranberries, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Green Day, Oasis etc).

Personaly I won't be very original and stick with Radiohead.

The Batlord 03-10-2016 03:46 AM

Korn.

All of the Chili Peppers good albums came out in the 80s.

If Kid A came out in the 90's I think you'd have a much stronger case.

What's with people putting 80s bands on the 90s list? All but one of REM's best albums came out in the 80s and all of Metallica's best albums were in the 80s.

100% agree.

Sounds like Korn is looking pretty strong right about now.

Well at least they qualify as a 90s band.

The Batlord 03-10-2016 04:53 AM

That's two votes for Korn. Aw yeah. Where's my Norg @?

He voted for another 80s band: Faith No More.

Janszoon 03-10-2016 05:01 AM

How about Unsane? Now there's a great 90s band. Debut album was in the 90s. Best albums were in the 90s.

I'd say Cows or MBV if I wasn't worried about Janzsoon being up my ass since they were founded in the 80s.

Hell yeah.

I had to check but that one with the train decapitation cover did come out in the '90's. It seems like the late 80's when I first saw that in MRR but Wiki doesn't lie. Now my brain is going to be twisted up for the rest of the morning. Gee, thanks.

I thought about considering the more extreme stuff but I figured this thread had an unsopken general appeal rule. That's why I went to for the Lips. Plus, Hit to Death and the Soft Bulletin are 90's releases.

Without Isn't Anything he's be justified with MBV.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 03-10-2016 09:26 AM

Acid Bath or the Melvins probably. I mean, you said rock and they're both sludge metal but they're still the best so who really cares?

BSSM (1991), Stadium Arcadium (2006), By the Way (2002), Californication (1999), One Hot Minute (1995) My favorites of their albums. They didn't even get Frusciante until '88. And their first real chart topper was in '89.

If he were right, Nirvana would be an 80's band, too.

None of those albums are good though, hence my comment that their only good albums were in the 80s.

Ninetales 03-10-2016 10:49 AM

i'll go with Vampire Rodents or The Dead C

Sated Ire 03-10-2016 11:42 AM

The Wildhearts, hugely under apprecisted

bflattery 03-10-2016 08:37 PM

My 80's band with a 90's break thru album would be Soundgarden - Superunknown
But I know this is supposed to be about a 90's band..so..I guess STP would be it for me.

JGuy Grungeman 03-17-2016 01:51 PM

NMH for their two albums, Dream Theater for their 90's stuff, Radiohead I guess for their first three, Soundgarden for Badmotorfinger and Superunknown. Pearl Jam for Ten and Vs., too.

Pearl Jam are pretty hit or miss for me, but screw anyone who didn't answer with Acid Bath or the Melvins because you're wrong.

Norg 03-17-2016 06:58 PM

Well first of all I'm talking about the Patton era of fnm not the original guy or 1st album

And I change my vote to korn has well. So korn wins

Korn
Lip
FTL
Issues

I called it first, you're just jumping on my bandwagon.

Well, they did release three albums in the 80s and one of them was with Patton.

There was this Rockdoc on Grunge or something and the dude who looks like Sideshow Bob from Melvins was kind of pretentious like only Melvins played true Grunge. I forget if he was reffering to Nirvana & Soundgarden or Creed & Nickelback but yeah he was like "I play the real stuff and they play the fake stuff." OK I get it you're from the state of Washington and you were out before Nirvana and you dress all grungy and junk, but I thought bands like Babes in Toyland could hold their own. No need like you are the only one who discovered Grunge music.
OK even though it should had been Melvins, I kinda get why Nirvana is the face of Grunge, but why is Greenday the face of 90s Punk?
Babes in Toyland > Melvins
The Muffs >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Green Day

JGuy Grungeman 03-17-2016 10:50 PM

Ummm... Melvins weren't grunge. They were mostly sludge metal. I just played Melvins. Take it from a guy who's heard 175 grunge albums. Melvins were an influence on future grunge albums, but they themselves weren't grunge. Grunge has a very distinct teenage angst and guitar style. Melvins had angst and guitar, but not the same kinds.

Neap

Good copy on the Muffs.

What a great and underrated exciting band.

That's funny your take on Buzz Osborne. I haven't seen that interview but considering how much they borrowed from Sabbath they got some nerve talking about who's the real deal.
