Metal Showdown (Round 7) - Nirvana vs Metallica

http://www.musicbanter.com/rock-meta...s-nirvana.html

Last round, AiC finally met their demise with Nirvana, with 7 votes to Nirvana's 11. Still a really respectable showing, though.

Now to turn things up a bit more for the metal, Nirvana will be going up against one of the giants and pioneers of heavy/thrash metal, Metallica.

Metallica

There's not much to say about these guys that hasn't been said a million times before on this forum. They've lost their way the past decade or two as well as become lazy in the studio, but still remain living legends within their genre and are capable of bringing in the thrash vote this time around.

Nirvana

Cobain and the gang come back for their second round. Let's see if they can hold up against an opponent that's outside their sub-genre.

My Verdict

I'm going to have to go with Metallica on this one, simply because I discovered them much earlier than Nirvana, so I have more fonder memories of them. Still love Nirvana, but I don't have the same connectivity as I do with 'Tallica.

JGuy Grungeman 03-26-2016 02:10 PM

Metallica. Nirvana's great, but I love Metallica riffs and lyrics more.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 03-26-2016 04:01 PM

Not Metallica.

Black Francis 03-28-2016 04:29 PM

Metallica cause Metal is in their damn name.. Also cause i don't think Nirvana is very metal, i guess you can say Bleach was metal but imo that album is not heavy enough. also, not to be a dick but i think you should've chosen a better song for nirvana. maybe endless nameless or Aero zeppelin.

The Batlord 03-28-2016 04:45 PM

Metallica, if for no other reason than Kill 'Em All.

JGuy Grungeman 03-28-2016 07:34 PM

Damn. Metallica's getting a real margin, I thought it woukd be a little closer.

Aux-In 03-29-2016 01:08 AM

I voted for Alice In Chains.

Janszoon 03-29-2016 04:00 AM

Nirvana's a band I listen to about once a decade. Metallica's a band I listen to several times a year. Metallica for me.

bob. 03-29-2016 08:36 AM

^i am in the exact opposite boat.

Metallica is a band i listen to three or four times a year. Nirvana is weekly.

Wpnfire 03-29-2016 11:07 AM

Nirvana has one album I like, while Metallica has one near-perfect album and another album I like. Metallica wins.

JGuy Grungeman 03-29-2016 04:02 PM

Given their reputation with Reload and Lulu, I figured Metallica would be losing. Then again, it's the most famous band of the big four of grunge vs. the most famous band of the big four of thrash. I suppose thrash would be the winner since its much bigger, even though Nevermind is more highly rated than MOP based on magazine charts and aggregated ratings sites.

A lot of artists get boring after they've been around a long time. That doesn't make great work they did early in their career any less great.

Neapolitan 03-29-2016 07:02 PM

I don't go out of my way to listen to Nirvana, but I really can't stand Metallica.

Exactly how I feel. Metallica's legacy is cemented.

Primeval Scum 03-30-2016 02:21 AM

4 albums I love vs. 4 albums I love, 4 that are decent and 2 that are terrible.

I guess the unblemished discography wins, regardless of how great the latter's high was. Very tough though.

Voted for Metallica. Nirvana is grunge so I'm not sure what's up with the Metal Showdown label. No hate, just an honest question.

There's only one way to tell if this man is a kindred spirit. What's your favorite pasttime/hobby?

Sure I'll bite, playing Blade & Soul, a PC mmorpg.

If all that sounded like Greek, it's a video game.

JGuy Grungeman 04-06-2016 01:40 PM

Is it gory?

HellCell 04-06-2016 01:43 PM

Not at all. There's combat and flashy moves, but no blood. It's M rated, but I fail to see why, except to attract players?

This is why i voted for Metallica despite the fact i prefer Nirvana.

JGuy Grungeman 04-06-2016 02:12 PM

Confirmed.

Hate to be the 57th jerk to say this, but......

Nirvana? Metal? Especially when compared to Metallica?

Nirvana is grunge, not Metal.

Not saying Nirvana's metal., but there is a thing as grunge metal. It's called "early Soundgarden." Listen to Ultramega OK.

Not only that, but there's no such thing as grunge metal.

I wasn't saying it's a legitimate genre or tag, but it's commonfor grunge albums to be metal.

It's also common (and completely understandable) to call early Soundgarden metal, even if they weren't the bestexample.

Ah! You can't tell me Dirt doesn't have some serious metal influence.

Ah! You can't tell me Alice in Chains was even grunge in the first place.

Yeah, but as Tristan said, AiC were already classified as grunge.

JGuy Grungeman 09-15-2016 11:07 AM

Bands can be two genres in the same album. Besides, Layne was already in a glam metal band before forming AiC, and that influence went into AiC's music.

"Alice in Chains" was supposed to be the name of a hair band, and when you throw Melvins into the mix their music makes a lot of sense. They were a metal band with Melvins influences who gave a polite head nod to their grunge cousins across the hall.

JGuy Grungeman 09-15-2016 11:10 AM

Layne Staley's vocals were one of the leading influences in grunge. A lot of grunge bands tried to copy him. And Eddie Vedder.

Yes. But if a band is grunge, I automatically assume they're going to be influenced by that genre throughout their albums. I know about multiple genres in albums, but calling an album a genre where it has no reason / doesn't exist is just adding genres for no reason.

JGuy Grungeman 09-15-2016 11:12 AM

Alternative metal doesn't exist in one of the world's most famous alternative and metal bands that helped to bring alternative itself into the mainstream, as well as being noticably different from the others of the big 3 for it's obvious metal influence from metal bands like Melvins?
