Under those circumstances, I guess it's sort of an impressive vocal performance. I once received a compact ball of ice right in the nuts at full speed and I couldn't squeeze anything but consonants out through my lips for at least 5 minutes.

The best Who album is Who Are You

But they're all great, including Who's Next, from the debut at least through It's Hard.

Easily a top 30 or so artist in my book.

Some of the most hilariously over the top vocals in metal.

Now that was really silly.

Do these guys ever get sore throats?

These are my favourite extreme metal/punk vocals:

That is absurd, I can't help but love it though. Anyone putting in that much effort gets a pass from me.

Sounds like Abner Louima on that fateful night.

*ouch, that was low*

Vargs vocals in Burzum are (largely) not his own natural voice. He used various methods to contort his voice to that shriek. Truly if you didn't know this you have no business discussing extreme metal vocals. Tisk tisk

Frownland 08-24-2016 11:10 PM

I want to meet someone who is surprised that a black metal vocalist doesn't speak in strictly black metal shrieks.

Really?? Seems as though you'd rather perform fellatio on every talentless hack who has to use a multitude of pitch shifting technologies and techniques.

Frownland 08-24-2016 11:22 PM

I'd be interested in meeting both.

I always thought this was a really badass guitar riff, at first I couldn't even stand the vocals, nowadays I can sympathize with the music, would still prefer an instrumental. Their clean vocals are not bad either.

Dylstew 08-28-2016 05:31 AM

I was just enjoying Stupid Stupid Henchmen until my mom had to point out Chet's Lo-Fi screams kind of sound like Donald Duck. Now it's hard not to be reminded of that https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIk0Er7wKdw

I guess someone's gonna innovate, Cookie Monster vocals just aren't special anymore. It's all about Donald Duck vocals now.

Thorinton 08-28-2016 04:54 PM

Before about 2005, I did not prefer the growls, groaning, and screams (outside the few delivered by Phil in Pantera). However, I remember the first time I pondered the crossroads of interest. I was listening to "Full Moon Madness" by Moonspell off of "Irreligious" and thoroughly enjoying the music until near the end the harshness began. Having to face, I could finally branch out and get the "Intelligent man's 'Death Metal' of Opeth, I threw in the towel rejecting it. It led to me getting into Graveworm, Estatic Fear, and countless others in the Gothic Metal genre. I realized at some point that the characterization of the growls, screams, groans, has a narrative reason as to why they are there in some songs, and not others. :thumb:

DriveYourCarDownToTheSea 08-31-2016 06:06 PM

Has anyone ever tried harmonizing with death metal growls? Now that would be interesting to hear!

Thelonious Monkey 08-31-2016 11:36 PM

Pantera was the first band I listened to that had these vocals. And I remember absolutely loving it. Still do, Phil sounds badass.

Terrapin_Station 09-01-2016 07:25 AM

Sepultura is the first band I remember hearing do that style of singing--back in 1986 (well, or I might have heard it only in early 1987 instead) when Morbid Visions came out.

Wpnfire 09-01-2016 10:46 PM

I don't care what anybody says, these are still the best vocals in extreme metal.

Those vocals remind me a lot of the darker vocals on acid bath. These are good too.

Delusions of Paranoia 09-22-2016 05:32 PM

The first time I ever heard a scream it was in a song called The Way I Feel by a Christian band called 12 Stones. He pretty much only screamed one word, and it was a pretty weak scream, but after that - I wanted more.

I'm still getting used to the different ranges of screams and growls though, and definitely have my preferences.

Sorry if this isn't any help.

The Batlord 09-22-2016 06:43 PM

Christian band with awesome screams and awesome every-****ing-thing else...

This is the second post about Zao being a Christian band. I could've swore they were satanists.

Check out their Wiki page, it explains it.

Nah. I saw your other post.

But for those who didn't, now they know that they should check Wiki.

greengiant 10-15-2016 05:30 AM

Certain growls are more appealing to certain people. If you don't like any that's your prerogative. I mean pantera might help you get used to it. He had a growl but it was also understandable and he sang more mild too.

greengiant 10-15-2016 05:33 AM

I just noticed these posts are older.

I actually thought , once like when i was way younger,16-17? that metal was the only entity that would save the entire humanity and the world, I remember even swearing it to my friends to mark my words lol ...now I really wish that was true..i still do hope even now actually at 27.:) ppl jst dont want to find out what it is all about ..they'd rather with only the nicest things and let others deal wit the dirty jobs.. i find that very selfish and irresponsible..I know ,I mean it may sound annoying and loud and distracting and what not but come on if look deeper or care enough to look into what's behind the so called growling, squealling one may find priceless treasures...simple, read the damn lyrics.these guys have a lot to say that makes a hell lot of sense, they are serious people with good intend, truth is ugly you know and obviously anger come with it (I.e if you really have a heart and care for something).you can't help but SCREAM being angry ...look at the way the system is, the values we embrace ah!.....you know better.., youd b actually surprise to find dudes with long hair, tattoos , spikes n piercing are the nicest ppl on the planet..to
cut it short for me metal music opened my eyes and I'd remain thankful cos now I know what I believe is the truth and it set me free, I denounced everything then.. I only believe in trying to be good and help myself without letting other pay for my needs, greed, or whatever!...I treasure bands like FEARFACTORY, Faith no more,TOOL and zillion screaming n not screaming others as well, most that belong in the 80sto early 20th...and now I hate to see it becoming more like a trend rather than a revolution, Bt there is always hope I suppose.........:finger:

Yeah, same thing with me and polka.
