"I Like the Music, But Do They Have to Scream?"

A lot of people seem to have trouble getting into one of the staples of metal: screaming/growling/shrieking and it's cutting them off from a lot of great music. I used to have this opinion when I was growing up with metal but something just happened along the way and I was cool with it.

I was wondering if you guys had any entry level screaming tracks or any methods to get used to the style. I was also interested if anyone is able to share their personal experience of how they stopped worrying and learned to love the growl.

Tristan_Geoff 08-16-2016 05:29 PM

I liked thrash. I like progressive metal. I liked Deftones.

My buddy liked Meshuggah but I just couldn't quite get around the heavier vocals on songs like Bleed, but then he showed me New Millenium Cyanide Christ and I loved it, since the vocals were quite close to thrash and it was a little easier to digest. From there I just got more and more tolerant to it. I only really enjoy it with a couple groups though, and only tolerate some of it cause it is kinda annoying at times, but never really grating or too much to handle like it used to be.

The Batlord 08-16-2016 05:36 PM

Slayer > Bathory > Morbid Angel > etc

kibbeh 08-16-2016 05:37 PM

when i was in my early teens i thought my chemical romance were metal... i was NOT used to hearing screaming/shrieking in music i guess just cause i was never exposed to it. it made absolutely no sense to me why anybody would enjoy listening to the screaming but yeah... after getting more and more into metal it started to sound okay to me but honestly, some of it still sounds annoying.

Death metal growls used to be something I just couldn't take seriously, then at some point I realized that I didn't actually have take music seriously to enjoy it.

And then you start calling 4'33 music.

Frownland 08-16-2016 06:13 PM

I like the part where I use my brain to justify my position more than people who choose to misunderstand the piece.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 08-16-2016 06:14 PM

I usually show the piece to my friends when we're in need of a good laugh. It really is the ultimate troll.

The Cage Against the Machine cover is quite **** though.

It's not a real piece. It's not doing anything for a specific amount of time.

It's quite simple if you actually consider what the piece is instead of just thinking it's a "silent" piece, actually. That's what I meant by intentionally misunderstanding the piece.

I've never heard any that I enjoyed. If you have some recommendations, by all means let me know.

Yeah, it's performance art. I don't even know how it qualifies as a piece, and the fact that you self-consciously keep calling it that suggests that you don't either.

Not really lol.

It's because piece is conventional terminology for a classical music composition. Go ahead and ignore the fact that the piece is all about sound and expanding the paradigm of what we consider instruments.

kibbeh 08-16-2016 06:37 PM

but its music with no music

But regardless of whether or not there is sheet music to it, it was only composed in the technical sense. Cage could have put any number of rests on that page and it would have meant nothing. He could have literally put nothing and it would have been just as meaningless. No matter how you feel about 4'33, calling it a piece or a composition is like calling a paper airplane an actual plane. Technically correct, but ****ing pointless.

So stop calling it a piece cause it's ****ing stupid.

And using words like "paradigm" when trying to explain pretentious nonsense is just as stupid as calling 4'33 a piece.

What have I begun?

Lulz. And I guess that there being fifty different ways to dictate an A# invalidates any notation using that note too then?

Like I mentioned earlier, I'm using my brain to form my opinion and that occasionally includes words.

If writing it differently had no effect whatsoever then yes.

Nah, you up the smarty factor when you're trying to sound arty. You're a wannabe arty smarty.

Interpreting an artistic performance is one thing, but deciding whether or not a "piece" consisting entirely of rests really qualifies as a musical composition doesn't take as much thought as you seem to think it does.

So your big issue is how it looks on paper? Alrighty then, dude, have fun misinterpreting the song (note how I didn't say that dirty word "piece").

I just think it's dumb calling it a song or a piece or a composition when it's status as one is so flimsy or even nonexistent. Judge it on its artistic merits, not your Cage boner.

We can throw the word "subjective" around as much as you want but it will never hold up in this I'm right, You're wrong world
