Thoughts On Tool

Okay, so I was searching for alternative metal bands on the internet, I heard about tool and I saw people saying how brilliant and incredible they were, so I listened to their albums, and I couldn't stand it.

I liked only three songs and that was it, everything else was boring, repetitive, extremely pretentious, and went on for way too long.

It felt like watching a 4 hour movie that people say is a masterpiece, when all it is, is just a time wasting, boring mess.

I don't know about you, but I hate songs that are long and don't offer much to the table to intrigue the listener, like if their songs were like 3 to 5 minutes, then that would be fine, but no, they drag songs from 6 to 13 minutes. Like who has time and patience to listen to a song that goes on for 13minutes?

Tools lyrics are filled with pseudo intellectual, and pretentious stuff like who cares about journey of people who took some brew that no one has heard of, who cares if your songs are about biblical stories, and who cares about saturn's orbital period like these people are like "hey, lets add some obscure things to our songs so we sound deep and smart".

And finally you got the fans, the fans just as bad as radiohead fans, a majority of tools fans are pseudo intellectuals who either listen to their music to look smart or show off how cool they are because of that since tool is loved by tons of people.

I can dig long songs, Tool just sucks.

Blank. 08-19-2016 03:21 PM

Tool is great. But it's a very specific style that's not for everyone.

Inb4 Batlord says tool sucks.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 08-19-2016 03:30 PM

I already said it.

Can we change that?

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 08-19-2016 03:46 PM

You'll have to check with gayboy first.

Blank. 08-19-2016 03:47 PM

Ok. I'll ask him.

Pretty much my feelings on Tool except I don't mind a band being pretentious. At least pretentious band have ambition. I'd rather see people trying to write deep lyrics and fail than see someone write another cock rock anthem about seeing a hawt lady in a bar and wanting to bone her.

Go team pretentious!

Maybe Tool's fans tend to overestimate the bands success in making sense.

Anyway, musically they are mostly a load of odd-timed grooves that go on forever. You're either into that or not.

You guys make the worst impression on newcomers. I've only been here for a year and I still wouldn't turn my back on anyone in here for two seconds.

Lets focus on the big picture which is how Tool sucks.

I get all the odd-timed grooves that go on forever from Sonar and without having to subject myself to Maynard's lame singing.

*snip*

Not bad! I really like the drum sound in particular. Bookmarked.

Key 08-21-2016 02:15 PM

People on this forum will say that Tool sucks, but will listen to the likes of Captain Beefheart and will ejaculate over try hard singers and Frownland-esque noise rock. Y'all need to get out more.

MicShazam 08-21-2016 02:47 PM

Seen on some Tool forum somewhere on the internet, discussing the meaning of a particular song:

"i've been reading about these conspiracies for a couple of years now. i'm not sure of the true agenda though. i believe we are being blinded of a bigger picture here. involving the sentence stating that the "lluminati" shadow government, trilateral, whatever you want to call it, believe that man is god, i too believe this. in a different way. i believe in sentient energy. the displacement theory in a way. so in a way, we all are "god" as you would put it. the idea of a well funded, powerful intelligence controlling the masses and governments of the world is very feasible in my eyes. read the "you are being lied to" series."

Their fans sure are pretentious or at the very least, bat **** insane. Well, some of them.

Blank. 08-21-2016 02:57 PM

I have what I like to call my big three bands. They are 3 bands that I think make the best music and are are all time greats. Tool is one of those bands. That said, tool fans are ****ing dumb. They think by listening to a band that writes music about Carl Jung theory of consciousness they are mentally superior. Carl Jung had a crack pot theory. The fans focus on Maynards Lyrics, but Maynard purposely doesn't put his lyrics in the booklet of the album for so fans won't put so much into his words and will focus on the music and interpret it their way.

What are the other 2 of the top 3? ICP and Kenny Loggins?

Dylstew 08-21-2016 03:46 PM

Not a fan of long songs in general, found the album I listened to by this band unique but kinda meh. However I listened a long time ago. Do like that hooker penis song 1blankmind sent.

I agree with Mic Shazam, I don't mind pretentious music. I like Liturgy's Aesthetica and they couldn't be more openly pretentious.

Dylstew 08-21-2016 04:17 PM

Batlord, you're a ****ing tool. How the **** can I take you seriously now? You like ICP.

The Batlord 08-21-2016 04:21 PM

Better than all things Tool has done combined.

Dylstew 08-21-2016 04:28 PM

''I have a lot of mixed feelings about ICP. Not that they have any good music, cause they don't. They have horrible music, but since I work with kids who are in the system (Children's Residential Centers) I meet and work with a lot of juggalos and juggalettes. Seriously. the % kids who I see who are ICP fans is surprisingly large. What I like about ICP is how they have managed to foster brotherhood between all these ****ed up kids who almost literally don't have any other family. And when they meet each other for the first time, they become almost immediate friends. They take good care of each other. When gang members meet kids in their same set, they don't love each other like juggalos do. It's weird and sorta disturbingly heartwarming. I've shared this notion with said juggalos and they don't like that i think that their music is ****, but they dig how I appreciate their "family", which usually leads to these kids being some of my best students. Which is ****ing crazy since I think ICP straight up promotes proud stupidity. The whole thing is ****ing weird.'' - Some guy on Reddit.

Peeerfectly described Batlord, doesn't it? -_-

MicShazam 08-21-2016 04:30 PM

"disturbingly heartwarming"

Didn't know that was possible until now.

No. I don't have friends.

Dylstew 08-21-2016 04:40 PM

That's because you're an *******, Batlord :').

The Batlord 08-21-2016 04:45 PM

No, people just seem to get all bent out of shape when I molest their children.

Dylstew 08-21-2016 04:47 PM

Pretty sure that's just part of being a huge gaping *******... who touches children's their *******s.

Don't you mean make friends with their children, assuming they're into ICP?

The Batlord 08-21-2016 04:49 PM

The parents would probably take it better if I waited till they were out of the room.

Hooker with a penis is a prime example of the band when they don't give a shit. Instead of writing a prog song, they write a jammer. And instead of a typical pretentious crackpot theory, he tells a story. And I think personally, the story he tells there is deeper and more incredible then anything else he's ever written.

Then again I'm not an overly pretentious fuck who's music needs to speak to me on a deeper level.

Fuck ICP! And fuck loggins. It's QOTSA and Slipknot.

Here come the Slipknot sucks comments.

Frownland 08-21-2016 10:04 PM

Not even gonna touch Slipknot. I'll always respect QOTSA for the outro on this though

Great song! I love the transition from stoner rock into Jazz. I can't think of any other band that would dare to try that and do it so well.
