Do you get such a big hype around Eddie Van Halen?

I think people misunderstand VU. I think the more import thing about the band was ideas John Cale brought into the band which come from drone and experimental music. (That's just my personal opinion.)

Epic album.
One of the contributing factors for The Clash was that they at the time provided affordable albums. Plus they had their ear to what was happening in Jamaica (i.e. Dub music) and they were kinda popular in the R&B and hip hop crowd cause of it (early-stage of hip hop).

In the late 70s I was in a band playing **** like Rush, UFO, Travers, Trower, Zep, Tull, Floyd, etc. I hated both disco and punk for ruining it for me. But at least I could relate to punk bands where the guitar player was up front playing loud and with distortion - and the music wasn't geared toward dancing.
