Devo - the worst band from new wave/post punk scene?

What you think about this band?

I listened many new wave/post-punk bands and I think Devo suck. I can't stand their robotic sound without a melody.

I think Devo are great. Here's one of their more underrated songs. In this live version, the guitar is pretty prominent, so maybe you can notice the melody more. ;)

Mondo Bungle 05-02-2017 04:37 PM

saying Devo has no melody is like saying, I dunno, something else that is false

Devo defines pure new wave.

They are no longer subject to criticism. They are among the unassailable.

I feel like you're the kind of person who hates metal music because "it has no melody."

Exo 05-02-2017 09:23 PM

I think YOU suck OP.

Spectralmusic 05-02-2017 09:23 PM

They're not my favorite band from that subgenre but they're by no means a bad band

Oingo Boingo for the new-wave
XTC for the post-punk/alternative rock side

Boingo have so much great stuff, they don't ever get boring...and who doesn't love Danny Elfman! :thumb:

Oingo Boingo better than Devo? Good grief.

XTC is much better but the best post-punk band?

No.

Or because "I can't understand the vocals therefore the music is trash"

"It isn't music if it doesn't have lyrics. Songs need lyrics man."

I've heard that a few times. Always amuses me.

First they said that to Beethoven, then they said that to the second Viennese school, then they said it to the jazz guys, then they said it to the Darmstadt school, then they said it to rock 'n roll, then they said it to (any incarnation of) metal, then they said it to hip hop, the list goes on, go cry me a river

Exo 05-02-2017 11:57 PM

Calm down. We're still talking about Devo here.

Justthefacts 05-03-2017 01:04 AM

I saw a kid trip out one night and wear a devo hat at a Kanye West concert. Aside from that I don't give a shit about Devo either amiritefellas?

Texas Boy 05-03-2017 05:30 AM

Devo just ****ing suck! Period.
Jocko Homo is one of the crappiest tunes I ever heard. I would rather listen to any Lady Gaga song than Jocko Homo.

Well, I like Lady Gaga too, but I'd say I like Devo more. Their album Oh, No! It's Devo is close to perfect and doesn't get get talked about nearly as much as it should.

Definitely underrated. Speed Racer is a terrific song.

Kinda redundant to say that something that is obviously opinion is an opinion though, right?

F. Ex. Orange is an ugly colour, in my opinion.

Didn't know this thread was serious enough to avoid redundant comments...

Frownland 05-03-2017 08:55 AM

I didn't know something had to be serious to be concise.

The correct usage would be "It isn't a song if it doesn't have lyrics (or rather, a lyric). Songs needs lyrics. Man." Music. on the other hand, does not of course.

Also, here's something to consider: the spelling of Devo can be rearranged to make the word dove. The dove is the symbol of the Holy Spirit, one incarnation of the Holy Trinity. So if you slag Devo off, you're basically slagging off the Holy Spirit, AKA God, also making baby Jesus cry, and you should feel bad.

Pretty simple I would have thought. A song has to be able to be sung, therefore needs a lyric. Is "Moonlight sonata" a song? No, but it's still a beautiful piece of music. Well, that's how I see it anyway.

You're misinterpreting the convention as the rule.

Exo 05-03-2017 10:24 AM

I...don't...agree.

Trollheart 05-03-2017 10:32 AM

Whatever. To me, a song is something with words. Anything else is a music track or piece of music. You can't sing it, it ain't a song.

To me, the sun is a planet.

Just because music is subjective doesn't mean that the terminology is.

Kind of proves my point though really: what that says is that songs usually have words, but these ones don't, and anyway, excellent as they are, they're pieces of music, just titled Songs Without Words. I actually have that album. Beautiful stuff. But not songs in the conventional sense.

There's also birdsong of course, but that's an entirely different matter.

If someone played you "Classical gas", would you consider that a song? Perhaps it's just a personal thing I've grown up with, but the various definitions below seem to bear this out.

song Meaning in the Cambridge English Dictionary

Song | Define Song at Dictionary.com

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/song

An actual song without words is an instrumental, or a piece of music.
