Right but people that aren't fans of those genres would lump it all together. It all sounds the same to them. It is just like how all EDM gets labeled techno for people that can't tell the differences between the sub genres.

You really just equated Elvis to Chuck Berry. I guess you may have known Chuck from your parents playing his music and yeah I did forget you are a card carrying AARP member.

Also cool Batty picking up on my typo. I was stuck in the middle of a water accountability meeting listening to a local politician wing his way through a speech he wasn't prepared to give.

Frownland 07-23-2017 12:29 AM

Chuck Berry is not obscure in the slightest.

djchameleon 07-23-2017 12:56 AM

He isn't Elvis popular though and for a kid to be listening to him. Right. Like you were listening to Chuck as a kid.

Frownland 07-23-2017 01:39 AM

He is definitely Elvis popular. You think Back to the Future just picked a song for its protagonist to invent rock n roll with willy nilly? Just because it doesn't reflect your own childhood doesn't mean it isnt culturally relevant.

djchameleon 07-23-2017 02:46 AM

What teens do you know that are listening to Chuck Berry though. Come on now. I'm not saying he is culturally relevant. Most teens just aren't listening to his music. Also one song from BTTF doesn't count in the same way as someone listening to his body of work.

AARP member? You and I are pretty close in age DJ, if I'm a card holder, I'm sure yours is in the mail. And, yeah, of course I'd mention Chuck Berry and Elvis in the same context. I'd also mention Buddy Holly, Little Richard, and Jerry Lee Lewis in that same context. They're all legends from the early years of rock music.

Who said anything about listening to his body of work? I was just talking about knowing what he sounds like.

If you'd like to argue against points I actually made, hmu.

Don't know if you're just being smarmy, but this is a really ****ed sentiment. We won't know what the inciting incident was (or if there even was one), but suicidal ideation might consume one's life one night and when they wake up the next day they're very happy they didn't do it. Speaking from experience.

I wouldn't argue Chuck Berry is obscure, but he's not as culturally known as Elvis Presley, as the most rudimentary use of statistics shows (Chuck Berry spike coincides with his death):

Janszoon 07-24-2017 08:25 AM

Yes, Elvis is more famous than Chuck Berry. This has no bearing on the point I was making.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 07-24-2017 08:49 AM

safe to say less than 25% of the people i know within my age group would know chuck berry

Think they'd at least recognize Johnny B Goode, wrong person?

maybe, doubt they would be able to name the artist though. not that Chuck Berry isn't well know, but he definitely is very very very far from being a popular artist amongst teenagers, or even a household name for them. my anecdotal is irrelevant here anyway though because i think Jansz was trying making a broader point than that.

Frownland 07-24-2017 09:21 AM

Not popular among that age group, most certainly. Not a household name? Little more uncertain on that.

you think most 16 year olds could tell you who Chuck Berry is? negative.

Frownland 07-24-2017 09:25 AM

Let me go find a 16 year old hang on.

Could a 16 year old name a Linkin Park song I wonder?

yes

Frownland 07-24-2017 09:36 AM

Nah people generally are ignorant of things that occurred before they were born.

i could be wrong here (im not) but i think linkin park were still pretty happening. maybe not at the same level they were during the nu metal rise but definitely still headlining festivals for teenage scene kids.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 07-24-2017 09:49 AM

when's the last time Chuck Berry headlined a festival anyway?

/thread

Frownland 07-24-2017 09:53 AM

The 16 year old said "I like Chuck Berry just leave me alone please." I didn't get a chance to ask about Linkin Park.

Considering recent evidence I'd say this would change if he was in Linkin Park.

A lot of djs put LP songs into their set and made mixes. Linkin Park songs were the most popular thing in almost every dj's set this year at Ezoo.

"One More Light" music video directed by Joe Hahn & Mark Fiore.

“It has been incredibly emotional to work on this, and especially to watch it. I feel that by doing it, we not only faced some of our biggest fears, but it enabled us to use our talents to bring some light to people that need it. As we move forward to the Hollywood Bowl show and beyond, I think about the people that connect with the band, outside and inside our circle. This video is a gesture of good will to the people that want that connection.”
- JOE HAHN

“One More Light was written with the intention of sending love to those who lost someone. We now find ourselves on the receiving end. In memorial events, art, videos, and images, fans all over the world have gravitated towards this song as their declaration of love and support for the band and the memory of our dear friend, Chester. We are so very grateful and can’t wait to see you again.”
