I just looked at the tracklist and most of my favourite tracks on that album are actually on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath lol. I still love a lot of the cuts off of Vol. 4 like Snowblind and Supernaut, but I'd agree that Master is better.

OccultHawk 06-23-2017 07:19 PM

The first ten seconds of Sweet Leaf is so ****ing euphoric.

Spectralmusic 06-23-2017 07:38 PM

Well Master of Reality is probably my favorite.

Though of course, all of their first 7 albums are exceptionally great, pretty much every track

The Batlord 06-23-2017 07:43 PM

I know the back half of the debut isn't that great, but the first four songs, from "Black Sabbath" to ****ing "NIB", is the definitive Black Sabbath experience. So Black Sabbath for me.

Frownland 06-23-2017 07:45 PM

Sabatoge>Paranoid>Sabbath Bloody Sabbath>Master of Reality>Vol. 4>Black Sabbath>the rest

The Batlord 06-23-2017 07:52 PM

You disappoint me. Black Sabbath was also Ozzy's best performance. You can tell that he wasn't quite used to this new style, and so he's way less polished, but he's also at his most raw and intriguing. Definitely one of my favorite vocal performances.

Frownland 06-23-2017 07:55 PM

It's definitely a great record.

OccultHawk 06-23-2017 08:35 PM

I know it's predictable but War Pigs. The lyrics. The vocal delivery. The imagery. The message. The structure. It can't be beat.

I have no idea why I've never particularly liked "War Pigs". It just never quite clicked with me, even though it's gotten better for me over the years. I'd say "Faeries Wear Boots" might actually be the best song from that album.

Frownland 06-23-2017 09:00 PM

Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
General minds that plot bad masses
Symphony of death in masses
In the fields the bloody masses
As the war machine kills masses
Death and hatred for the masses
Poisoning the brainwashed masses
Oh lord ja!

The Batlord 06-23-2017 09:05 PM

Ozzy's cool, but I don't particularly like the riffs. They're kind of dull when they're trying to channel the same kind of thing from "Black Sabbath" at the beginning, and even when the song picks up it still feels tepid throughout. Ozzy definitely carries that song for me.

Frownland 06-23-2017 09:09 PM

I get what you mean in the masses. Out of all the songs on Paranoid, it definitely sounds the most tired, like the masses. However, I have to say that the drumming is badass as the masses.

It makes me hard when we agree.

Snowblind may be my fave BS song ever.

Neapolitan 06-23-2017 09:51 PM

I don't know Heavy Metal enough to criticize the list. It looks like it has the same four bands over and over with a bunch of odds and ends thrown in to boot. However the list has the best of both worlds. It has Def Leppard - Pyromania and Napalm Death - FETO they should both be tie for 1st place, and bring balance to the force.

I agree, Volume 4 is a bit of a slog fest and is my least favourite out of the big 6.

"deep dish" as in extremely introverted & introspective (as in preferring music as background noise like Miles Davis and John Coltrane) than yes I can see that.

Volume 4 doesn't have any memorable guitar riffs. Sweet Leaf and Into the Void is enough to throw Master of Reality near the top for me.

Coltrane is boring and he sucks a$$, he's for little pussies who beat off to olive oil every night because they don't know how to communicate with women.

I quite like Miles Davis though.

Frownland 06-23-2017 10:23 PM

Coltrane is heavier than most death metal what are you on about?

I like Coltrane but as background music, when I'm listening to heavy metal though, I want something more structured with a repetitive guitar riff, which is why I prefer Master of Reality to Volume 4.

I hella don't approach it as background music, so that's probably where the rift is here. Honestly I find Coltrane distractingly amazing, I can't help but carried away in it.

Another boner.

I can only take so many of these a day at 57 years old...........

Gimme a ****ing break dude.

Seriously.

Frownland 06-23-2017 10:38 PM

I'm more wtf about you respecting Coltrane .

If it keeps your dick from bursting, read through the thread and you'll see that I kinda rescinded my placement of Vol. 4 over MOR. I do love me some Snowblind though.

With the notable exception of Supernaut (whick f'ing rocks) I kinda agree with you. It's not terrible but it's well below the caliber of the albums immediately before and after IMO.

*edited to add: I saw the Vol. 4 tour in '72

Chula Vista 06-23-2017 10:50 PM

Coltrane, Parker, Montgomery, Corea, love them all.

Stream of Consciousness music is essential. I've never studied them but have completely absorbed them. I know it comes out in tiny little ways when I'm totally going off.

Yes Supernaut has some interesting palm muting going on it.

When it comes to introspection versus loud and proud though I tend to lean to far one way when it comes to Sabbath albums. I'd probably order my big six something like this.

1) Sabotage, 2) Paranoid, 3) Master of Reality, 4) Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, 5) Black Sabbath, 6) Volume 4.

72? Wow, your a lot older than I thought. For some reason I always thought you were an ex punk rocker

I gotta say, Planet Caravan and Electric Funeral are the highlights of that album for me, every goddamn time

Here's some "background music":

When it comes to Judas Priest I think Sad Wings, Stained Class and Painkiller are a way better albums than any 80's Priest album. I always found British Steel and Screaming for Vengeance to be very overrated albums.

Beat off to olive oil? Like seeing a bottle of it makes them hot?

Please

Please

Please

Don't pretend you know dick about Coltrane or you've absorbed some kind of understanding.

You haven't. And that's what's reflected in your terrible music.
