I mean at this point, Dev might as well be in a tribute band. He might even learn the charm in playing interesting music if he picks a good group.
You have a very strange manner of criticizing things you don't like. What isn't "genuine" about following your muse? What you are saying here could just as easily be applied to you....hell, it could be applied to anyone who has built any kind of career in music.

Here's a real world example for you: the founding members of Dream Theater all studied at Berklee College. Love them or hate them, they can play circles around pretty much anyone. They chose to go into progressive metal (which in 1992 was not exactly a super profitable genre of music) instead of a genre you might love. Going by what I've seen you post though, I guess they aren't genuine either.

When I say that it's not genuine, it means that it sucks and has no soul.

And ja, my world music influences do tend to be filtered through a westernized lens and I'm always working away from that very easy cliche to participate in and towards something more original. Thing is, I pick decent genres to build off of instead of **** like new age and glam metal.

Did he tell you how much soul he did or didn't put into his music

When it sounds like it was made from a computer algorithm of basic musical modes, yes I can.

Devin Townsend = Dave Grohl = Uwe Boll = Hitler and that's just simple math, folks. You're on the wrong side of history and science on this one.

I can admire Devin's creativity and how productive he is. He certainly doesn't rest on his laurels. The music he makes isn't for me though and the way he tends to layer and mix his music makes a lot of it feel sort of similar to me.

I've not listened in depth to most of his albums, but I have surfed around a lot of it through the years and... at least his metal projects don't seem massively different from eachother to my ears. Not that they aren't different from each other, but it's not like the difference between 80's glam and early black metal.

I feel like he's diverse, but definitely also has a lot of personal stylings and preferences that shine through in most of what he does. That goes for almost any good artist, so it's not like it's a bad thing.

My biggest criticism of Devin is that his music mostly feels bland and sterile to me, but that has to do with how he want's things to sound and how I want the opposite. Listening to any of his metal projects at length gives me a headache.

Basically, I admire Devin but I don't like his music.

Give Casualties Of Cool or some of his more ambient material (like The Hummer) a try. Ki and Ghost both avoid his usual production methods in some respects as well, so they'd be secondary recommendations.
