Far too many death metal bands have wimpy production, which 100% kills the heaviness. Especially when it comes to drums.

I blame detuned and 7 string guitars. They suck up too much of the drums sonic space.

Mixing death metal is definitely a challenge, but some succeed big time, so I don't really feel like being too forgiving about thin drums. It's just a genre with a lot more bad albums than good.

Not versed on death metal but, yeah... heavy can be done right.

Just because it's a great album doesn't mean that it's heavy.

An example of a probably quite good death metal album that sounds strangely flat:

I think they must have pulled an And Justice For All and turned the bass down to barely hearable levels. Sadly, unlike on that Metallica album, the guitars don't even sound very fat here. To me, heaviness is fairly closely tied to bass heavy grooving - not just aggressive, "evil sounding" playing.

In some sections of this Obituary album, I really can hear the bass very clearly though. It just has this flat, mid level tone that doesn't do much to beef up the lower end of the guitars. Took me a while to realize that's the problem more than low volume.

Oh just stfu and listen to what's there. Sure it isn't perfect production, but it's not like it's mastered to the point of making any of the instruments inaudible.

Dude I'm just explaining why it isn't what I would call super heavy. Didn't say it was bad. Plus I really care about how an album sounds, but that's another thing.
