Lynyrd Skynyrd is a great band. They are the Led Zeppelin of the South. No lie.

Rock bands trying to do country generally fail, whereas country artists doing rock at least work when they're not using country as window dressing on what is actually rock. Country is a hard thing to get right and not sound cringey, whereas rock really isn't that hard to at least get a passing grade. Skynyrd do better than most rock bands since they're rednecks, but they're still coming at country from a rock POV and therefore don't get the country atmosphere quite right. They certainly have their moments though. "Down South Juking" is the bee's knees.

First off. Skynyrd had some great tunes but they were far from a great band historically speaking. If not for their live version of Free Bird becoming a bit of an anthem (I chock that up to all of the massive cocaine use of that era) they'd be a minor footnote, remembered more for the plane crash than their music.
