Black Sabbath vs Led Zeppelin

vs https://img.wennermedia.com/article-...ed3d813a20.jpg Both legendary bands (imo), both of their first six records were immense, and both of them have/had a lead singer with long hair. Discussed a bit in the LZ4 thread but maybe deserves it's own thread so here it is. Who is better? |
No contest. Sabbath all the way. Sabbath created heavy metal, and for that I will always be grateful to them. Also, when did Plant ever bite the head off a bat? Not you, Batty, I hasten to add. :D
Seriously, what is this that stands before me vs there's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold: which are you gonna pick? Pipers in hedges or devils standing at the bottom of your bed? And let's not forget the mini maestro, RJD RIP. |
I have Sabbath at 22 and Zep at 21 all time on Freak Fighter so neck and neck with a tiny edge to LZ

Zep getting trounced so far.
Expected it to be a bit closer. |
Zep is the band for classic rock bores. Sabbath is the band for real music fans.

Those were two separate incidents though.

Sabbath all the way.
LZ bore the **** out of me. |
No doubt Zeppelin were also an important band, but I never owned any of their albums. I used to listen to a lot of Sabbath back when I got into metal, plus they kind of helped invent what has become one of my main music genres, so... That's where the vote goes.

Led zeppelin :)
The only Black Sabbath record I like is the first....... Dont really care for the 2nd,3rd,etc...... It just isnt quite as good as the first album.... Led Zeppelin I like the first,2nd,4th (Zoso) and I have a live concert from them (THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME) and I like that also...... I had Black Sabbaths 1976 record TECHNICAL ECSTASY and i love it but THE VOCALS ARE SO LOW ITS RIDICULOUS! (Ya can barely hear them) -- Very badly produced...... |

I'm more of a Zep person I guess. Paranoid and Master of Reality are both classic albums but I think Zep was a little more consistent (at least until Presence) imo.

Free > Sabbath >>> Zep

Sounds like someone has been keeping with bad company  |
If you're a fan of folk rock, then you'll most likely choose Zep, if you're more of the darker metal edge persuasion, then you'll pick Sabbath. For me, it mostly boils down to the two guitar players, with Page being more subtle and organic with a lighter, whimsical approach and Iommi being more straight forward and rigid with darker elements. Being left handed and missing a finger tip had a big role in his choice of guitar timbre. Hence the darker sound.
Personally, I've had a Zeppelin phase and grew out of it, but I've never gotten tired of Sabbath. |

That's a good point. I am a folk rock fan and I do find that Zep is somewhat more eclectic than your typical metal band. Zeppelin experimented with sounds outside of their blues-rock origins, in particular with folk and reggae. Something like Misty Mountain Hop, for example, even has a little bit of a garage rock vibe. So, yeah, Zeppelin probably does a little more for me than Sabbath might. |
Sabbath isn't a 'typical' metal band.

Maybe not but I bet they never recorded anything country tinged like Black Country Woman or Down By the Seaside. (Not knocking Sabbath btw, just explaining why I prefer Zep) |
If they had wanted to record something like Black Country Woman or Down by the Seaside, then they may have well just changed their name to "We're Just a Cheap Ripoff of a Folk Rock Band".

Do The Beatles, The Who, The Stones, Queen, etc. get points taken off too for branching out past their base sound and exploring other genres? |

I enjoy a lot more of Sabbath's stuff to Zep's. They have a more pleasing sound to me.
Individual songs, I just love Sabbath more as well. I don't think Zep have ever made anything that is close to being as good as War Pigs. If I compared record to record of the first 6 I think I would prefer all of Sabbath's, except for maybe LZ4. I prefer Ozzy's vocals to Plant's also. Also most of Zep's stuff doesn't sound Metal imo. I still like them btw. A great Hard Rock band. |
Anybody calling Sabbath a typical metal band needs to get their head checked out. Black Sabbath were by far the most important band in the development of heavy metal, they created doom metal, stoner metal, and arguably thrash metal as well. They made the first progressive metal album, and they were highly influential in stoner rock.
There's other things like Bill Ward's crazy-ass drumming, Iommi's use of downtuned guitars, and the frequent use of dissonant riffs. |

Plank, seemed like you were faulting Zep for flexing their songwriting muscles and branching out beyond the heavier blues based stuff. |
