Rush officially calling it quits.

Peart had announced his retirement 2 years ago but fans help out hope that there might be one last album and tour. Lifeson confirmed recently that the band if officially done. :(

Well, 41 years and 30 albums is a pretty damn good run!

No stupid line-up changes

Legacy intact

Great band, never stopped killing it live, three fantastic musicians with magical chemistry

Their music makes the world a better place

I hope they have a great retirement

****ing great band

Are you saying that adding Peart was a stupid line up change? Seemed like a good move to me.

Better that they end this way than running their legacy into the ground. At least people like Ozzy are kinda embracing the latter at this point.

No. The implication was that Rush didn't stain their legacy by changing members. And to think, if not for Rutsey's health he would have stayed in the band and they would most likely have fizzled out after 2-3 albums. Heck, they almost got dropped after Caress of Steel even with Peart at the helm for two albums.

But of course your interpretation is right and mine is wrong.

Frownland 02-28-2018 01:40 PM

I didn't catch that you had removed the word stupid from OH's quoted post. That changes the meaning of what he said quite a bit.

OccultHawk 02-28-2018 01:58 PM

Nice try on the misquote and Pete Bestish trivia Chula. ’

You’ve desecrated Rush’s sacred memory with a failed gotcha.

So sad...

Lighten the **** up and learn how to take a joke - hence the *cough* preface.

At least Rustey actually recorded an entire album with Rush. Best was canned before the Beatles began recording Meet the Beatles.

Whatever.

I’ve always had your back with pure Rush love and now you’ve gone and done me dirty. <\3

I’m completely devastated, man, my Rush honor has been disrespected. Seriously, wtf is wrong with you?

Frownland 02-28-2018 04:04 PM

You just need to recognize when someone is being hilarious.

Chula Vista 02-28-2018 04:10 PM

Snarky, not hilarious. You of all people should know the difference between the two. I'm disappointed man.

So how many times have you peeps seen Rush? I can remember 5 shows, the first of which was in front of about 1,500 people on the Fairwell to Kings tour - right before Rush exploded in popularity.

Paul Smeenus 02-28-2018 04:11 PM

I misread this thread title as "Bush officially calls it quits", I thought Bush 41 finally kicked the bucket.

I take Rush seriously. It’s not joke to me.

I saw them once on their Time Machine tour where they did a 3 hour show. Was cool and the drunkest, dorkiest, sausegefest of a concert I've ever been to.

OccultHawk 02-28-2018 04:21 PM

3 Times

Touring signals grace and power windows

I actually think Grace might have been the best. I still love that record

Power Windows was their first crappy record so grace was when they had the most good material and least had material.

Sprawling on the fringes of the city
In geometric order
An insulated border
In-between the bright lights
And the far, unlit unknown

Growing up, it all seems so one-sided
Opinions all provided
The future pre-decided
Detached and subdivided
In the mass-production zone

Nowhere is the dreamer
Or the misfit so alone

Subdivisions
In the high school halls
In the shopping malls
Conform or be cast out
Subdivisions
In the basement bars
In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out

Any escape might help to smooth
The unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe
The restless dreams of youth

Drawn like moths, we drift into the city
The timeless old attraction
Cruising for the action
Lit up like a firefly
Just to feel the living night

Some will sell their dreams for small desires
Or lose the race to rats
Get caught in ticking traps
And start to dream of somewhere
To relax their restless flight

Somewhere out of a memory
Of lighted streets on quiet nights

Subdivisions
In the high school halls
In the shopping malls
Conform or be cast out
Subdivisions
In the basement bars
In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out

Any escape might help to smooth
The unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe
The restless dreams of youth.

I actually love Power Windows. Thought it was the best of their 80s synth heavy period.

Whatever you say Frowny....

You like Power Windows better than Grace Under Pressure?

Chula Vista 02-28-2018 04:29 PM

Fave early period = Caress of Steel
Fave classic period = Permanent Waves
Fave synth period = Power Windows
Fave latter period = Clockwork Angels

Is 2112 early period? Is Signals classic or synth? Are all periods divided by a live record?

Chula Vista 02-28-2018 05:13 PM

Rush > 2112 = Early
Fairwell to Kings > Moving Pictures = Classic
Signals > Roll the Bones = Synth
Test for Echo > Clockwork Angels = Latter

IMO. These are not black and white choices - tons of grey between eras.

OccultHawk 02-28-2018 06:36 PM

Do you have to kind of fake it to enjoy the latter period stuff or do you really like it?

I respect them so much for what they accomplished but, to me, those late period records have no charm. Listening to those records is, to me, like petting an old faithful dog that has been stuffed by good taxidermist.

Plankton 02-28-2018 06:47 PM

The Garden is a genius send off tune. So glad I got to see them a couple years ago after 40 years of being a fan and just blatantly missing each and every time they came to town. My brother, on the other hand, has seen them maybe 20 times. It was 1978 when I first heard 2112 and was transported into a new world of impeccable drumming, lush guitar chords, incredible bass lines, and fantastic futuristic story telling. Inimitable in many ways. From the Fear Trilogy, to Lifeson's Victor, Lee's involvement with the McKenzie boys and SCTV, and Pearts influence on the drumming world as well his family tragedy's, they encompass a world of perfection, struggle, and perseverance, as they go out with their integrity intact.

To be honest I really disliked the albums between Power Windows and Clockwork Angels. I didn't buy a single one of them. They all have some great stuff but a lot of them were trying to hard or simply falling back on cliches.

So glad they went out with CA. That album kicks serious ass! And I love how they quote bits and parts from their classic years. The perfect Swan Song IMO.

PLANK, couldn't agree more!!! Feel the same way about Zep's I'm Gonna Crawl, their last official release. (Coda was old outtakes that were released to satisfy a contract with Atlantic Records)

Good post

Thank God Zep never tried to replace JB. I wish The Who had done the same thing.

As someone who thinks that Bonham is the essence Zeppelin, I think that if Bonzo's Montreaux was the closer on Coda, then it would be the perfect swan song for Zeppelin. I feel like Bonham's both overrated and underrated at the same time. Overrated because a lot of people only call him great because he was in Zeppelin without thinking about why that makes him a great drummer. Underrated not only because of his exceptional playing, but because he drives the group in such a direct but also almost understated way when compared to the flamboyance of Page and Plant. It might just be because so many people borrow from his influence in the emptiest way possible, but his playing also has an air of actually playing music like a jazz man instead of just checking all of the "right" boxes. Your track is a lot more fair to the whole group since it's more in line with what defines their discog though.

Back on topic Rush is neat. I only ever listen to the early stuff. If they only released the song 2112, that alone would be enough for them to deserve their legacy.

Cozy Powell was being considered for a very short period of time. But as JPJ said later, if we got a new drummer how could we expect them to gel live? We played the songs and jams differently every night and Bonzo, Jimmy, and I would just naturally gel into each other's grooves. We realized very quickly that you couldn't and told Peter Grant that Zep was done with John's passing.

Their official statement:

That’s a goddamn gem of a video. CP’s drumming technique, the way he’s holding the sticks, is an absolute pleasure to watch. That’s some seriously fantastic footage.

I agree for the most part. Songs like Time Stand Still and Turn the Page from Hold Your Fire still get me a little misty, and then there was a large stretch where Peart was channeling his inner struggles, but finally hit home (for me anyway) with Counterparts. Cut to the Chase, and Cold Fire are Rush at the best they could be at that point in their career. Cold Fire has some intense cymbal riding when it gets moving, and Alex's solo is simple yet powerful. I love this tune, such a great slow burn feel:

We could be talking about Quantum Mechanics and it'd somehow come back to Zep at some point. That's an endearing quality you have.

:D

How 'bout that cover album Rush did, ey?

Farewell 03-01-2018 08:42 AM

My very first concert was Rush (2112 tour) in 1976 in Kansas City. I was 5 years old. My older brother (19 at the time) talked my parents into letting me go with him and three of his friends. I remember the concert quite well because it was on a Sunday night and I had school the next morning. A good time was had by all.

I used to air drum the 2112 album in my brother's room spinning the vinyl on the old Pioneer stereo system. 2112 is still a fantastic album. Glad to see them retire on their own terms.
