Greta Van Fleet
Ok so these guys are obviously controversial but why not have a thread about them anyway. Everything I've heard up until now has sounded like a Led Zep tribute band, but this new song sounds like they're aping someone else:
Some people say Rush? But I'm not familiar with them. Also, his vocals seem less like Robert Plant (and are quite impressive technically). Anyway, it feels like a move in a better, slightly more interesting direction (or at least one I'm not very familiar with  )? Hmm? |
His vocals are a lot closer to Geddy Lee here, but the music isn't. I'd go with something closer to big 70's rock like Boston. It's not a direct lift, that organ has a Yes/ELO vibe to it. The vocals I think is supposed to be Geddy Lee but he kinda goes off the rails and has a little bit of Willie Watson (as you might hear in Midnight Special for example).
Lifting from other bands isn't the sin others make it out to be. But you need to inject your own ideas into it, or at least merge two styles together until you create your own sound. GVF isn't there yet, imo, but at least they now sound like they're getting there. That last album was disgusting. It was like children trying to impress their dirtbag uncle who still drove a Camaro and was trying to hold onto his youth. edit: there was a weird synth revival in the indie rock scene about ten years ago that I can hear on this as well. Like Foxy Shazam's "Oh lord" or Butch Walker's "Synthesizers." |

God damn I'm listening to Airbourne's debut for the first time in years and there's literally no reason why it wouldn't have dominated butt rock radio and gone platinum except that they just didn't have the label backing. Rednecks woyld have obessed over this album and I would have bumped fists with them over it
