Anyone who argues that Led Zeppelin had more recognisable songs than The Who needs their head tested.

The Who were one of the first Rock bands who had hit single after hit single who appeared on Radio & TV on a regular basis.
Led Zeppelin didn`t release any singles they never did any TV & they were hardly ever on the radio , to hear Led Zeppelin you either had to buy the albums or see them live.
I`d say if you played a non fan songs by both bands they`d recognize stuff like My Generation & Pinball Wizard much better than any of the Led Zep songs mentioned in the post above.

I'm not saying that Zeppelin had [I]more[I] recognizable songs than the Who. Im just saying they have recognizable songs as well. I would agree that people would know Pinball over the songs i mentioned (if only because it's the most played song from Tommy). I guess I should have been more specific.

Isn't that because The Who made radio friendly music? It didn't exactly exceed the 4 minute mark so radio dj's weren't shooting themselves in the foot like they would by playing 8 minutes of Stairway.

It's easy to have single after single when they are over in a couple of minutes. Although in saying that, The Who deserved all the radio play and acknowledgement that they got. I just wouldn't want these two bands to be judged on their radio play because Led Zeppelin would get mown down in a flash.

No it`s because Led Zeppelin didn`t release singles, and up until 1988 in the UK you were not allowed to play album tracks on the radio.

And there are a handfull of songs from Tommy, Whos Next and Quadrophena that are around 4 to 8 minutes.

like i said in moon v peart,

these polls breed anger and hate

you cant compare led zep and the who - they are both great but they are both very different to each other and comparing them is just wrong.

its just like comparing jazz with rock, or mozart with mccartney

The Who were good, but let's face it LZ were absolute beasts. Never has there been such a talented group of musical genuises. The Who should be compared to the Beatles not LZ, and the Beatles I'm afraid would pummel them there as well (they'd prety much pummel anyone)

As for The Who > LZ, live...Meh LZ were a live band. 350+ million record sales, with only Elvis and the Beatles topping them, speaks for itself.

surprise, surprise.
I picked Zeppelin.
But I do love The Who

The Who, because Page couldn't hold a candle to Townsend.
