Holy **** did that album let me down. Tool is one of my favorite bands, and after 5 years I was expecting a great album, not an average one. This one had a lot of filler, definitly not up to Tool standards, it seems like they spent more time on the art than the music.

I can see where your coming from, it's definitely lacking some form of killer punch. Like an Aenima track or a Third Eye. Even Ticks and Leeches.
And for all the hype of it being back to their hardarse roots, that didn't really happen.

I personally love it for what it is, it's gold, but feels a little restrained compared to all other releases.

I definitly see appeal to it, but it didn't reach me, but Tool isn't one of those bands where everyone loves the album or everyone hates it, each album is subject to a wide range of opinions with a band like Tool, and it's hard to rate their music.

I'm not even really a Tool fan, but I too had been looking forward to their new album. Unfortunatly, it just made me pull out some old Alice in Chains, and mourn Laine Staleys' (sp?) death all over again. He knew how to whine about his habits more effectivley IMO... And if I had some music journalist a**f#cker making notes during my writing and recording sessions, I'd probably turn out a sub-par album too!!

I understand exactly where your coming from dude - funnily enough, I've been listening to it since joining this forum about half an hour ago or so, and I'm currently on 10,000 days - but I also really love this album, I think it has some of Tool's best songs to date, and it's definatly got some amazing riffs. I mean, TRUELY amazing - the opening to Jambi, for example...

Only time will tell what people really think of this album though - I know I'm not going to suddenly stop loving it, but I can see it growing on a lot of people in the future.

And I do also agree with something else said - there is some unwelcome filler, but I don't find it to be in the songs...namly it's the usual filler you always get, the in-between tracks.

The instrumental track, Lost Keys, is such a moving song - the conversation at the end really opens it up.

But to sum up, I'm very happy with this album and personally give it a 10/10, simply because I can't imagine ever not liking anything that Tool launch our way.

I've listened to the album at least 30 times now, and it's still getting better with every listen.

I think it packs a lot of 'punch'. The second half of "Vicarious", the middle section of "Jambi", the last few minutes of "10,000 Days", all of "The Pot", most of "Rosetta Stoned", and the climax of "Right In Two" are all wonderfully heavy and (in most cases) epic.

I was really hoping for a Disposition/Reflection-esque track on this album, and they definitely delivered with "Intension".

"Lipan Conjuring" is a cool segue, in my opinion. The only track I haven't really been able to get into is "Viginti Tres". It just seems like a poor album closer. Then again, Faaip De Oaid wasn't the greatest ending either, but Lateralus is still one of my favourite albums of all time, so...:)

So I shouldn't waste my money in other words?

swim 05-04-2006 01:51 PM

^buy it.
You can't judge a Tool album in the first month. I didnt like any of their albums on the first listen but, after a while you start noticing things you didnt notice before. I'm hoping this album is the same so far I'd say it's good hopefully a couple months from now I'll think it's great.

TheBig3 05-04-2006 01:53 PM

I liked the last three pretty quickly, if you're having to wait, well im not of the mentality that if I listen to it enough i'll like it. Thats a RH mentality that I don't subscribe to.

(fake plastic trees just came up on iTunes and now I feel like an ass)
