THE ONLY Tool Thread

I know there already are a few Tool threads, but this one is exclusively for news/info on their upcoming release, "10,000 Days". The first single will be "Vicarious", and it should start receiving radio play sometime this weekend, or at the latest, Monday.

For those interested...here's a review written by Andy King, an attendant at one of the "10,000 Days" listening sessions. Apparently the band wasn't too pleased with Andy posting the review online, and he was forced to take it down (as far as I know).

Track 1: “Vicarious” (7:06)
Mesmeric start. Hypnotic beat. Jagged, angular off beats. Familiar trancey passages punctuated by a guitar part reminiscent of an older Tool track. Tribal drum beats fuck with a lovely melody and climax with Maynard’s vocals.

Track 2: “Jambi” (7:28)
Melodic intro with almost balladic vocals from Maynard. Lighter feel (almost, dare I say it, APC-tinged), but not for long. Danny gets stronger – Baresi releases our tubthumper and the feel gets much heavier into ‘chugga chugga’ off beats. Then – here’s some unusual guitar work. Man, it’salmost Hendix-like! Then back into a heavy tribal groove.

Track 3: “Wings For Marie (Pt. 1)” (6:11) / Track 4: “10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2)” (11:14)
Starting with Buddhist temple-flavoured gong tweaking the collective nipples of Kraftwerk, a deep sphincter-rumbling bass and om chanting might recall ‘Parabol’. After 3 minutes of this nerve-wracking niceness, all Hell breaks loose with mega-heavy riffdom before slipping back into spaciness after 30 seconds. Like an epileptic convulsion in a night of deep sleep. Hawkwind does Greensleeves whilst Pink Floyd look on. The Record Company people are starting to look nervous and uncomfortable as if they have seldom HEARD anything so strange and worrying. What the fuck is this? Let me outta here! I need to go snuggle the Radio One Playlist! Suddenly it’s a crazed sea shanty for whacked-out space travelers. ‘You’re the only one who can hold your head up high. It’s my time now… my time now… give me my… give me my…’ duets Maynard with himself. Danny fights free of the evil clutches of Dr Baresi and goes off on one. Adam’s guitar recalls something off Lateralus again. It’s Triad, I think, but it’s almost impossible to identify one riff whilst another song goes on. The musical equivalent of rubbing one’s head and tummy simultaneously in different directions. They’re doing this on purpose to fuck with our heads. Bastards! Returns to full-on rhythmic Toolishness to end. No it isn’t the end. It doesn’t end like any other song ends.

Track 5: “The Pot” (6:22)
Oooooooh. This is THE one. Ya know what, pluggers? Radio might even go for this! Maynard’s vocals at the start are quite extraordinary. Place equal parts of Chris De Burgh, Tiny Tim and Bilal The Muezzin in a blender and run for your life. Easily the most commercial track to date. In fact, easily the most commercial track Tool have EVER done. That guitar is waaay strong again. Did Adam bribe Baresi? This is still twisted. It’s hard but commercial. The end spells a relief as climactic as a boil bursting. I go ‘Yessssss’ and the whole room of cool jouros looks round at me as if I’m a Bateman cartoon ‘The Man Who Ordered A Pork Sandwich In Blooms’. This is a SERIOUSLY awesome track. Just you mark my words.

Track 6: “Lipan Conjuring” (1:11)
In which Maynard becomes a Native American for no good reason. Strange, but we like a bit of strangeness.

Track 7: “Lost Keys (Blame Hofmann)” (3:44) / Track 8: “Rosetta Stoned” (11:14)
Guitars to the fore again. One long note with almost blues-like, overlaid note progressions. f@!# me, it’s House Of The Rising Sun cut with Ketamine. There are unsettling whispers and talking. Is this a bad trip or a psychiatry session? Come to think of it, is there a difference? ‘How Are You Today?’… ‘Tell Me Everything’ then THWACK! Into such a breathtakingly slappy, powerful riff kick that I’m actually physically winded for a nanosecond. Demonic, growling, rap noise over rhythmic heavy heavy groove. Forget the Were-Rabbit jibe. This is a f@!# full-on, nasty, shaven headed WEREWOLF. A lightbulb goes mental in the room. The Record Company almost lose all cool and run for it. I damn nearly join them but now I AM crying. I am gulping back wracking sobs at the sheer Toolishness of this monstrous, magnificent track. This is the real deal. Again snippets from Lateralus. You ARE playing with us. You ARE! This is Tool’s equivalent of ‘spot the Hitchcock in the Hitchcock film’! But I don’t care. It’s like The Best Of Tool in one song. The Bomb. It ends like the violent end of a violent life. And then it ends again.

Track 9: “Intension” (7:21)
Odd noises. Sea shore meets ironworks. Ever see the cartoon meisterwerk ‘Spirited Away’? You MUST! In it there is a character called Kamajii The Boiler Keeper who has 6 arms and an army of small black coals. This sound is similar. Soon joined by elastic bass and drum twangling over multi-layered Maynard whisperings and chanted vox. Shades of Pink Floyd again. Shades of the more ‘moody’ Lateralus tracks again. Reflection. Disposition. Tribal and hypnotic.

Track 10: “Right In Two” (8:56)
Melodic, slow, hypnotic. Almost balladic. Wall of Sound build-up. Danny does some Bamboo pole-type drumming into big riffage. Big, big sound. Tool at their weightiest. It’s almost Chinese at the end.

Track 11: “Viginti Tres” (5:01)
The walk out track (their description not mine). Oddness. The Noodles of Satan.

Nikie Pentagram 04-13-2006 10:20 AM

I didn't know half of that, thanks!

Stone Magnet 04-13-2006 04:41 PM

For those of you who haven't seen it yet, here is the cover art:

http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/1...000%20Days.jpg

The artwork is a spin-off of Alex Grey's "Web Of Being".

Here is a link to the official countdown to the release of the "Vicarious" single. I'm certain they'll stream the song on that site come Monday. It's still rumoured (and possible) that some online radio stations will be playing the single sometime this weekend though, so cross your fingers.

Merkaba 04-13-2006 05:10 PM

He makes every song sound so huge.

I REALLY want to hear tracks 3 and 4 now though. Thanks for this Stone Magnet, I'd only been checking t.d.n every once in a while.

I didn't think much of the artwork either until I noticed the other two faces on the side.

Stone Magnet 04-14-2006 11:27 AM

Here is a 30 second clip of the song "Vicarious". Sounds like Lateralus with Undertow's dick in it's ass. I love it. http://www.bloodshotmusicforums.com/...ns/biggrin.gif

swim 04-14-2006 11:58 AM

Stone Magnet 04-14-2006 12:05 PM

Just a couple days until we can hear the full song...

The album is being released in Germany on April 28th, so it'll probably leak by the 26th or so.

swim 04-14-2006 12:19 PM

Stone Magnet 04-14-2006 12:30 PM

Perhaps it is working, could be a John Cage tribute perhaps?

Hooray for the pretentious. :)

Stone Magnet 04-14-2006 06:59 PM

Here it is..."Vicarious"...the full song.

The vocals are very different. It took me a couple listens to get used to it, but it does kick ass.

explosions-in-my-pants 04-14-2006 07:07 PM

i have no idea how that thing works so i can't hear the song..

Stone Magnet 04-14-2006 07:19 PM

Scroll down to the bottom and click "Free". When the next page loads, scroll down to the bottom again and it should say "Download-Ticket reserved. Please wait [whatever] seconds." Wait until it gets to zero, then it should say "No premium-user. Please enter [whatever] here:". Type the code into the little box and click "Download from Net-Mirror Alpha".

cardboard adolescent 04-17-2006 03:25 PM

Interesting. New. Different. Very cool.

I was worried, especially when my friend downloaded it first and said he was really dissapointed, but I like it a lot. It actually reminds me a lot of The Hollow. But it has that harder Tool edge.

Levithan 04-18-2006 06:29 AM

I heard a minute clip yesturday and it was fantastic, really well crafted

swim 04-18-2006 06:33 AM

How the...?

Is it released in America now or is that a leak? I thought they were going to succeed in preventing all the leaks prior to release.

Stone Magnet 04-18-2006 10:54 PM

It leaked. The full album. :)

Merkaba 04-18-2006 10:58 PM

I'll download it, because there's no resisting it, but I'll still buy an original copy because I like Tool enough to do so. Awesome stuff Stone Magnet.

Merkaba 04-19-2006 02:48 AM

Another reveiw:

Quote:

So there I was, at a listening party ostensibly designed, very graciously, and at essentially no notice, for one. And then, in our hilariously clandestine "relocateable listening booth", the CD started.

The album does not wait. Unlike the past four Tool records ("Opiate", "Undertow", "Ænima", "Lateralus"), this one does not feature white space at the top. "Vicarious" hits you immediately. I am pretty sure that everyone is going to think it is entirely outstanding, a perfect way to get back into Tool. It seemed to be in 10/4, and for that and other reasons reminded me of "The Grudge." I'm sure radio will try to cut it down, but do not give in to them. This is one of the best tracks I've heard in a long long time.

All we have heard about guitars being more out in front and vocals a little subdued has been accurate. Guitar is the dominant sound through much of the record, but this is only when it is in full force; the record does get quiet quite often, and all four players are definitely playing an equal role.

As track 1 ended I relaxed a little, and actually laughed because I was so excited. I hadn't finished a quick chuckle before "Jambi" started, and I was so completely taken aback by how fantastic "Vicarious" is that I could not absorb or remember a thing about "Jambi" except that I liked it. Sorry.

"Wings for Marie" is really incredible. I was struck by the thought that it picks up right where "Reflection" left off. My host graciously explained to me, as it tailed off, that "that was part 1, this is part 2" -- and then turned the bass down a little because it was getting deeper. "10,000 Days" was also incredible. They remind of "Third Eye", "No Quarter", "Reflection", but in an entirely more intricate way. Ten years ago we all thought "Third Eye" was really really intense. I am pretty sure these two will rewrite your expectations of future epics.

By the way, one line posted among a snippet of leaked lyrics was "10,000 days in the fire is long enough." I don't want to ruin your fun, so I will say just this - the meaning of "10,000 Days" was immediately clear to me, especially from the line which follows that line. (I did cheat later and confirm by doing a little math, but I remain convinced.)

Now, up until this point the record felt like what I was expecting. Layered, intense, a straight progression from its forebears. Track 5, "The Pot", was not what I was expecting. Vocals here start off by taking a different approach than previous albums, but mainly only at the beginning. After the initial "what the..." it became like an old friend who had just walked in wearing something totally unexpected. Perhaps the best way to sum this up is to say that if you liked "Hooker with a Penis", you will like this song a lot as well. And yes, the title accurately reflects the subject matter.

To this point, I had noticed many little sprinkles from previous albums, callbacks to other themes and other progressions, perhaps tying these new tracks sonically and thematically to their older siblings. I continued to notice them throughout the record. Allusions to various songs kept appearing, though I rapidly lost track of where they all were. It will be fun to go through again and hear them, before you stop thinking of them as allusions to old songs and start thinking of them as parts of new ones.

"Lipan Conjuring", as you have all probably guessed from it's length (approx. one minute), is a segue. "Mantra" with spoons.

Interestingly, "Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman)" is also a segue of sorts, though it's three minutes or so long. Vaguely "Faaip de Oiad"-like. An instrumental soundscape with a long dialogue sample (from a movie?) buried within. The doctor, the patient, the visitor, all interacting.

"Rosetta Stoned" really took me on a ride. From what I recall, it sort of blended out of the previous track, and out of nowhere there were machine-gun-style vocals. Very percussive, snarly, distorted. For the first time, I started to think "hey there seem to be explicit lyrics here." Sudafed? Sunkist? Other S words? I think fans of Tool's earlier work will be into this one also. After one listen, I felt it to be simultaneously plainspoken and full of depth, simultaneously smooth and rough. I felt like parts of it likened to "H." but in a much faster way. I was really moved.

After that, it was hard to retain much about "Intension." Sorry.

But I think the flame becomes the fire.

"Right in Two" was one of my favorites. And not just all the monkey references. Lots of fantastically frenetic building. Great melodies. Oh and it was in 11, for much of the time anyway. "Cutting our love ..."

And so, it was time for "Viginti Tres." But my host was running late for dinner, and I was as well. It's another segue, I was told. I'll hear it soon, I said. We left the ... booth.

The guitars sound really sharp and loud. The bass sounds fantastically punchy, and sometime sounds like it does in the opening seconds of "Forty-Six & 2." Drums keep on trying new things, new instrumentations, new voices, new synths even; and keep on sounding incredible. Vocals seem to be pulled down a little overall, but this does add an element of "Undertow"-esque "what is he saying" fun.

I do think this album may not be one you just put on and rock out to. It's a much more satisfying meal than a snack. The downside of that is that it may not be as tailgate-worthy as "Opiate"; but that is probably the upside too. I think you will all find it immediately very striking, and you will all be pretty happy with it after one listen. But I do think that while you will definitely fall in love with it, it will take many people a little while to really get there.

I, however, loved it immediately. I can't believe I have to wait 19 days to hear it again.

You will want to buy this the day it comes out. Trust me. It may not be exactly what you are expecting, but it is exactly what you are waiting for. §

cardboard adolescent 04-19-2006 05:00 AM

Oh God... it's so good. It's so not what I was expecting... but it's exactly what I was waiting for.

I'm glad I still have it pre-ordered. I can't wait till I have it in my hands and I can cradle it like a baby... okay my Tool fanaticism is surfacing... I have to go... listen to the album more.

Bye.

Merkaba 04-19-2006 06:03 AM

Just heard it all. Couple of thigs that I can remember above all else...

The Pot: Wow, taken aback at first by Maynards boyish vocals and then it became the heaviest song on the album.

Viginti Tres: Freaked me out with the headphones on, sound coming from one side then the other, completely different feel to listening to it on stereo.

Not sure how I feel right now, I almost wished Maynard had more normal singing pieces as it's much like Aenima with the edited vocals. Oh and I'm hoping to come across 10,000days version of Third Eye or Disgustipated because after the first listen I couldn't pick up anything alarmingly unusual like those two trademark tracks that I use to define the other albums. Other then that it kicks arse and I'm going back for 2nds to get a far better grip:yeah:

swim 04-19-2006 07:26 AM

oh so good.
thank you stone magnet
