Van Halen

Heh, sorry if I got anyones hopes up. Although there are lots of rumors of VH getting back together (david and eddie...), i doubt itll happen any time soon. POINT ASIDE, I was browsing blabbermouth.net and came across this today:

From blabbermouth.net

Original VAN HALEN frontman David Lee Roth is featured on three tracks on "Strummin' with the Devil: The Southern Side of Van Halen", a collection of VAN HALEN songs done in bluegrass style that will be released on June 6. Roth joins the JOHN JORGENSON BLUEGRASS BAND for twangy renditions of "Jump" and "Jamie's Cryin'", as well as a special radio edit of the latter.

The album also features DAVID GRISMAN AND SONS, BLUE HIGHWAY, MOUNTAIN HEART, IRON HORSE, and others offering new interpretations of such VAN HALEN favorites as "Runnin' With The Devil", "Hot For Teacher", "Panama", "Eruption", "Ice Cream Man", "Dance The Night Away", and "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love".

You can now listen to the CD "Strummin' with the Devil: The Southern Side of Van Halen" in streaming media on CMT.com's "Hear Music Now" web site.

In the liner notes, the Indiana-born Roth explains that "my roots were always kind of country — not the same country as my first band. Their flag had windmills. Mine had BBQ pit and a shot glass."

The idea is odd, but the music is goooood :hphones: I listened to the whole thing off cmt and was really surprised how good it is. Any thoughts?

I used to have a big crush on Eddie Van Halen, but chances are he isn't as 'cute' looking anymore.. sadders.

i'm not looking forward to anything from then.. seeings how they'll more then likely suck, come back and go unreconized and then forgot about, then they'll go away again.

Van Halen is one of the greatest guitarist in the world, but what do others think about the band... hmmm i wonder.... tell me please, at least rate them 1-10 rating or 10* or whatever

bungalow 06-16-2006 10:17 PM

As a band: 7/10
As a guitarist: 10/10

brotheryourmy2 06-16-2006 10:22 PM

Yeah i say 5/10
and guitarist 9/10

They had some vary good songs like jump and eruption and they did wild thing pretty good too.

mosesandtherubberducky 06-16-2006 10:51 PM

I can play the tapping part of Eruption

as a band 8/10 (i have a soft spot for them)
as a guitarist 9/10 for Eddie's time. But now everyone does all his tricks and some are even better.

stakeraiser 06-16-2006 11:41 PM

growing up, I liked Hagar van halen (I was an 80s child) Now, I'd rather listen to Dave

dojo 06-17-2006 04:06 AM

I don't hate them, but I don't treasure them either. There are some songs I do enjoy and they do have an "uplifting" style. Good to listen when you wake up.

motley_crue131 06-17-2006 01:49 PM

van halen was great, i personally think they were better as van halen instead of van hagar, but i like both

bruise_violet 06-17-2006 03:15 PM

Aww I like to listen to Van Halen before I go on stage to act :D

swim 06-17-2006 03:17 PM

Eddie deserves endless respect but I can't stand this band.

mosesandtherubberducky 06-17-2006 03:19 PM

Either Joe Satriani or Steve Vai taught him. but yes

Eddie>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Van Halen

boo boo 06-17-2006 03:20 PM

Great rock n roll band is all i can say... EVH was a very original guitarist for his time, David Lee Roth is a great frontman, Alex Van Halen is a good drummer, and Michael Anthony.... Uh Michael Anthony... Well, God bless Michael Anthony, he tries.

bruise_violet 06-17-2006 03:23 PM

David Lee Roth is one sexy mo' fo'.

The Ten Thousandth Fist 06-17-2006 06:48 PM

Van Halen is okay. Not one of my favorite bands, but they're decent. Some of their songs are cool though.

Laces Out Dan! 06-19-2006 02:27 PM

As band with Hagar 7/10
As band with David Lee Roth 8/10
Eddie Van Halen as a guitarist 9/10

TheCaster 03-21-2008 07:45 AM

Ok well David Lee Roth did infact get back with the band in 08. Im sure you all know about the tour he did with them.

So, Things i'd like to discuss:
Was the break up of the original band because of Eddie or David?
What do you think of Michael Anthony?

I personally think it was david being an attention hog.
And i think Michael Anthony isnt that much of an addition to the band...

Mangus65 08-17-2008 08:23 PM

Best Van Hagar Album OU812
Best Van Roth Album VH1
Lets not even talk about the other one lol.

Eddie was the star of the band. Legendary guitar player who had a major impact on the future sound of Rock & Roll.

The rest of the band was good but none shined like Eddie.

boo boo 03-23-2010 01:50 AM

I'm giving this the bump.

Been getting into these guys again lately.

Unknown Soldier 03-23-2010 05:53 AM

A band with two distinct sides that seems to split their fans:

The David Lee Roth era was sexy Van Halen and a precursor for the dreaded hair metal brigade but they were glamourous and great to watch. Their first album is a great debut and an album I really like with the classic "Ain`t Talking bout Love" and an essential album to any hard rock/metal collection, as is the second album. The rest of the albums are patchy though, before they gradually steered into a very pop orientated sound and really had some poor albums post their debut album, even though I do like their cover of "Pretty Woman". The final album "1984" is without doubt their best since their debut and I think their use of synthesizers here, to be a success compared to other bands of their ilk.

The Hagar era sees Van Halen to be more consistent initially and both "5150" and "OU812" are very tight albums and really concrete the Hagar period and they are albums I enjoy. The next couple of albums "F.U.C.K"and "Balance" I remember to be more back to basics and the former came out at the time of grunge and seem to incoporate some elements of grunge.

The last album with Gary Cherone on vocals was bloody awful.

Insane Guest 03-23-2010 12:16 PM

9/10 Band
10/10 Guitar
Van Halen reunion would be great. I am and always will be a fan. No matter what happens, they are just a good band overall.

duga 03-23-2010 04:51 PM

This band has never been about the singer, to me. David Lee Roth annoys me. Sammy Hagar annoys me. Eddie tears it up.

Are their albums actually worth getting into? I have Greatest Hits vol. 1 and that has been more than enough Van Halen for me.

IMHO 1984 is a near perfect album and their self-titled is also very solid. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea (and not a style that is generally my cup of tea either), but I find both albums incredibly fun and think they'd be worth checking out.

boo boo 03-25-2010 06:52 PM

I honestly like Sammy Hagar, sure he has the dumbest lyrics ever, but I think he's a great singer and his Van Halen stuff gets too much flack, it's so completely different from the David Lee Roth stuff that I hardly consider it the same band and thus hardly worthy of comparison.

His stuff with Montrose is pretty kickass, it's just good ol' fashioned c0ck rock.

Also, don't tell me this song isn't f*cking awesome.

Korgüll 05-02-2010 09:53 AM

One of my all time favorite bands. The DLR stuff is great sure, but I prefer the Sammy stuff. 5150, OU812, **** Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, Balance = all amazing!

Brahma5 05-31-2010 06:11 PM

Van Halen

I don't see Van Halen getting back together. They did play some great music.

Dimebagdaryl 07-14-2010 12:44 AM

SGR 06-20-2011 08:47 AM

So what do you guys think of Van Halen? I think their debut is a pretty damn good guitar album. Fun rock music. 1984 was pretty good. Do they have any other good albums I should get?

Van Halen I
Van Halen II
1984
5150
OU812
For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge

These are the only ones worth getting, the first three are with David Lee Roth and the second three with Sammy Hagar.

The only other two that could be worth looking at are:

Women and Children First
Right Here, Right Now (a live album)

Its the group attempting to put more progressive elements into their sound and its an album that constantly gets talked about as being vastly underrated, personally I think its a load of rubbish!

If you see it for a couple of $ it might be worth buying to satisfy your curiosity. Also, its only about 30 mins long as well, very short for a non-punk album of that era.

Yes it was Roth, I was referring to ou812 and the other Van Hagar listed.

Why not? They`re great examples of pop metal! Especially with songs like "Dreams" and "Love Walks in".
