I remember Elliot saying that Bowie and T-rex was the basis for their sound. |
Def Leppard is a great band. On Through The Night has a few good tunes. I used to listen to Rock Brigade. The album doesn't have much of an edge to it though.
Their best album by far is High 'n' Dry. Every single tune on that CD rocks out big time. Timeless classic. Pyromania has a lot of decent pop tunes. I like the first half dozen tunes on Hysteria plus the song Hysteria. I'd like to see them return to the High 'n' Dry sound. Great rhythm and leads. Great vocals. Drums are a bit more complex. That's one of my all time favorite albums. |
So my wife has me watching this god awful "Dancing With the Stars", which is totally unbearable were it not for a few hot female dancers...
Anyway, so Def Leppard is on to perform the other night and I figure that at least they have a halfway decent band playing which is better than watching this sh**y dancing with the annoying house band and they come out and LIP SYNC "Pour Some Sugar on Me"??!! Are you serious??? Def Leppard are a band that has managed to stay at least semi-relevant over the years, they have a pretty decent body of work and now they're Lip Syncing one of their big hits on the ***est show on TV. It was a total abomination and truly embarrassing, no matter what they were paid. |
The majority of bands don't get any say on whether they can play live or lip sync on a TV show , thats all up to the producers.
Besides , they lip synced that song on shows like Top Of The Pops when that song came out so it's hardly out of the ordinary. |

I can understand a bubblegum band or a band that's relatively new and trying to gain exposure lip syncing (like DL on TOTP), but there is absolutely no reason why a band like DL has to do this at this point in their career and if you reseach this a bit more on the web you'll see a lot of hardcore fans are totally outraged. While I think it's pathetic, I am not going to disown them for doing it, I just don't think it helped them at all and made them look pretty cheesy. |
New?
They'd been around for about a decade , had 4 albums out and had already gone multi-platinum around the world. Lip syncing is a fact of television , always has always will. It has no bearing on the talent of the person doing it. |
IMO the only good that ever came out of pop metal is Van Halen (who were awesome, at least pre-Hagar, but at that point they were no longer metal and were basically Foreigner 2.0) and Def Leppard, who were at least decent by the standards of the genre. I mean Pyromania is a good album for parties.
If I ever hear Pour Some Sugar on Me again though, I might hurt somebody. |

And of course it has no connection to level of talent; Steve Vai or John McLaughlin could "fake" solos on Oprah or Ellen or DWTS or whatever, it doesn't mean they still can't play, however what would be the point? They are not seeking a wider audience for their music at this point. Def Leppard, at this late stage in their career, have nothing to prove and are not hurting for funds that I can imagine so I question why they do it. I understand why TV execs want to it, it's cheaper, easier, cleaner and less likely to cause problems. |
Yeah, I never understood syncing at concerts, if its someone like Michael Jackson then it makes sense, because he's dancing and stuff.
But when its just a rock band then no, there really is no excuse for it. If you don't have the balls to actually perform then whats the point? People come to see you to watch you play, not mimic the freaking album they already own. |
def leppard are class i went watching them at the liverpool echo arena last month and they were amazin, rock on
|
80s radio rock fluff with a randomly good debut.
|
I shamefully think that 'Love Bites' is a damn good ballad. I know I know. In the morning I will be weeping into my cornflakes berating my lack of taste.
|
I Can appreciate some Def leppard occasionally, but then again they were big when the pubes stated fillin' in, so i kinda' have a soft spoy for em'......Oh....did I say soft?
|
Yeah Def Leppard used to rock until they made the Hysteria album which was very pop. Too many girl songs not enough crunch.
|
Def Leppard pwns. Easily one of the best bands of the 80's, and all time for that matter. I was blasting them the other night in the sound booth. Probably could've heard it a mile down the road.
|
HIGH'N'DRY, baby... HIGH and FREAKIN' DRY!! That was GOOD Def Leppard.
|
yeah
high 'n' dry i always liked bringing on the heartache |
i like there remake of rock on

I've never really been into Def Leppard at all but my best friend saw them live in Melbourne a couple of days ago with Cheap Trick and said they were a pretty awesome and entertaining act to see live. |

When was the last time that band had any sort of mainstream prime time exposure? 1987? 1988? Nobody save a few diehard fans give a toss about anything you have done since , your album & ticket sales have plummeted through the floor and you're probably making hardly any money in the intervening 20 year period..... And then you get a call to appear on prime time American TV. You'd be a fucking idiot to turn that down whoever you are. Hell , Forget the money (Which probably wasn't that much anyway) you'd probably do it just to show that you're still around in the hope that it gets a few more bums on seats for your next tour. Besides I don't see what the big deal is. Virtually all bands mime in music videos as well , how is that any different? |

I dunno, I just don't think it's a very noble thing for a band to do, be them a new band or a old one. I guess it sucks if the producers insist on lip syncing, and it's ultimately not the band's decision, but I just don't approve of it. |

Just got into these guys. Never paid much attention to them back in the day, but after reading some reviews of the Pyromania Deluxe Edition (2nd disc is a fantastic live show from the tour), I picked this up. I have been told that this was their "peak", and next I should hear On Through The Night and High And Dry. I am going to get these also. They also put out an E.P. early on (on vinyl) which I would like to get.
|
i saw them a while back, and they sound just as good as ever, in great shape too and rockin it hard
