My favorite band with an odd number of limbs!

Seriously, I'm not a fan of Def Leppard, but they're probably one of the better rock bands of the 80's... but that's not saying much

BastardofYoung 07-03-2011 02:38 PM

I do not love em or hate em. They were kinda fun, and remain a guilty pleasure for me.

My memory of them though is the awkward teenage years, going to school dances just to stand in the darkest corners while they played "When love and hate collides" and I asked myself "what the F*ck am I doing here".

It is like this:

Same thing, but change clubs to jr. high/high school dances.

^Def Leppard!^

I would give my left arm to play in Def Leppard!

What is the difference between a turkey and Def Leppard? A turkey has two drumsticks.

BastardofYoung 07-03-2011 02:42 PM

but hey, having only 1 arm didn't stop him from beatting the sh*t out of wife in 1995.

Its a wonder she didn't beat his ass! It would be hard for him to block a right hook or counter punch an opposing strait left.

I'm sad this is in the Classic Rock section (which I didn't notice until today). Def Leppard was great for about a decade. Lyrically no, but the musicianship kicked butt, with maybe an unmatched layer of sound. Unfortunately, from what I've seen from recent televised live performances, Joe Elliot's voice is shot. Although people say it's rebounded a bit thanks to quitting smoking.

With that being said, I'm going to admit, I still really like the first 5, On Through The Night, High ' N ' Dry, Pyromania, Hysteria and Adrenalize.

I used to be a big Def Leppard fan back in the 1980s, before I ever really got into metal (I know that sounds ilogical:D) Its when I got into metal properly that I realized that they were nothing great, but full marks to them though for being one of those perfect gateway bands into metal. Pyromania is still a great album despite sounding a bit dated.

Howard the Duck 06-03-2012 03:23 AM

big fan here

and Adrenalize is one of my fave albums for that sorta thing

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-03-2012 11:15 AM

I have their appearance at the Reading Festival in 1980 somewhere.
They were pretty good back then.

Van Halen kinda suck.

I would agree with you but you're wrong.

I'd sooner listen to Van Halen than to Def Leppard.

BastardofYoung 06-04-2012 05:50 PM

I thought you were a huge Def Lep fan?

I used to love Van Halen, now I think they are more hilarious. That "Tattoo" song is bloody awful. Should have never reformed. With material like that, is it worth it?

At least a song like "Hot for Teacher" had a fun kinda of stupidity to it. Which is about all Van Halen was, fun stupidity. But they get boring fast.

I was when I was a kid, listen to them now and again but I actually think Van Halen's discography has more longevity and a better listen.

BastardofYoung 06-04-2012 05:59 PM

I am opposite now. I am not big on either, but I will take the cheese of a song like "Pour Some Sugar On Me" or "Lets Get Rocked" over the over indulgent Halen formula.

Van Halen are cool and all, Eddie is talented guitarist and all.... just find them unbearable most of them time now.

Unknown Soldier 06-04-2012 06:04 PM

Give me hot for teacher any time.

and give me this over that:

just listen to those lyrics, David Lee Roth is like Venom's softcore fluffer boy.

It is like art vs. pornography: Van Halen = Playboy, Venom = Hustler.

For me the key distinction is that Def Leppard only has a few songs I like (like the ones you mentioned), whereas Van Halen has a few albums I like.

Unknown Soldier 06-04-2012 06:06 PM

and I love Hagar era van halen, hell I love this song, its commercial as hell but who cares when a song is this good.

Well Van Halen are glamorous and Venom aren't, so I'd expect Van Halen to present the playboy image, Venom are from Newcastle and believe me, Newcastle it isn't glamorous:D.

You don't dig Montrose, Hagar was great in that band.

I'm kind of with you on that, though there's the occasional Hagar era track I enjoy, like "Right Now":

BastardofYoung 06-04-2012 06:17 PM

Just makes me think of this, and many an awkward jr. high dances:

Apparently this sing leads to masturbating and crying.

cozypowellsdrumkit 08-18-2012 10:44 PM

I don't like Hagar either. But I won't argue about it.

I like lots of DL too many to mention.

kidney_thief 08-19-2012 02:36 AM

I used to LOVE Def Leppard back in the day---actually saw them
on their first US tour when they were the opening act for The Pat
Travers Band, and again the next year when they were co-headliners
with Blackfoot.

That first album, "On Through The Night" was absolutely iconic for
me---I've listened to it literally hundreds of times. Second one was
just OK for me, it seemed to be a little too influenced by AC/DC.

By the third album, their sound had changed to the point of being
a little too slick for my ears, pretty much stopped listening to them
after that point.

Good to see that they're still around and kicking these days--I remember
the radio ads promoting them as the "...band with the average age of 18!"
back when their first album was released!

cozypowellsdrumkit 08-19-2012 07:28 PM

I had a Kerrang! article from 1983. A couple of the members of DL was talking of speaking with Ritchie Blackmore. He told them they weren't 'melodic' enough. So they began doing it as he suggested. That is when they hit it big. Blackmore said you won't go anywhere til you do. Blackmore is a wise man imho.
I like Blackmore's Night, don't get me wrong. But I wish he'd come back to rock.

But they were melodic well before 1983:confused: All they did, was just to tighten up the riffs and package the whole thing better for Pyromania.

I don't think Blackmore was that wise either, he broke up the classic Deep Purple Mk.2 line-up before baling out himself. He constantly tampered with the Rainbow line-up and got rid of Dio. He then went through a succession of talented vocalists in Graham Bonnet and Joe Lynn Turner, he never knew when he was onto a good thing.

He would have been much better, just being the guitarist and leaving the direction of the band to other people.

Halen 08-20-2012 02:30 PM

Great, great band until the mid 80s. Pyromania is my favorite album of 1983.

But everything since Hysteria is garbage.

Exactly....what's with this assumption that commercial = bad? It's tired and pretentious.

I agree, this forum is often stricken with opinions that because something is commercial and well known, is just not cool to like it.

You know, OU812 was actually the first album I ever listened to when I was like eight or something. I have no idea how many countless times I listened to that album. I haven't listened to it or any Van Hagar in years, but I imagine my nostalgia would come back like a freight train.
