Well in retrospect you have a mighty fine point.

He's trying to stay "hip" and not doing a terribly great job.

Then again he might even be proud of the success he's had, Supernatural revived his career so to speak, sold 25 million copies and won over a billion kazillion grammys. I don't think it's keeping him up at night thinking "god what have I done?".

On the up side it did expose him to a lot of younger people who then got to learn about the great stuff he was doing in the 60s and 70s.

So who is a good guitarist to you?

Carlos Santana was one of the first really popular guitarists to start expanding on the o-so-popular blues playing that was going around for so long. Yeah, he was really blues influenced but he was also very jazzy. His band pioneered rock fused with Latin music and jazz. He was one of the earliest jazz-fusion guitarists along with friend and collaborator John Mclaughlin.

It really surprises me that anyone could say anything bad about him, but no matter how good something is, someone is always going to come **** on it. From his melodic, jazzy lines to his aggressive speed playing (and he had some real speed), he was great. Don't see how he was repetitive. Sure, he had some licks that he used a lot, but most guitarists do.

Anyway, has anyone heard his new album? I read a good review of it in guitar player magazine. Any thoughts here?

This has always been a favorite of mine:

Frank Zappa - Variations on the Carlos Santana Secret Chord Progression - YouTube

...and I like Carlos. Saw him live a couple times.

Was this meant in a derogatory manner? It sounds great, and ya it does sound like santana. Both are great guitarists.

No, I always thought it was meant to poke fun at Carlos, but still be respectful to his craft. I "get it" on a few levels.

As far as the man himself, Blues For Salvador is a "If I were stranded on a desert island..." CD for me.

There are some Santana songs that I love SO MUCH.

Samba Pa Ti, Oye Como Va, his super famous cover of Fleetwood Mac, Evil Ways, Everything's Coming Our Way, Jingo, Fried Neckbones and Homefries especially.

But then there are many many that I don't care for, and he does sound monotonous.

I actually prefer his band over him on some songs. The congas and bongos do more for me many times than does the "secret Santana Chord Progression".

In most cases however, if there is good percussion going on, I can listen to that Santana sound all day, and have.

Yep, great guitarist. Maybe not as dynamic as other greats, but incredible at what he does.

I like that in 3 notes played you instantly know if it is Santana or not. Not many musicians can say that.
