at the risk of re-hashing every other person who has posted on this thread's opinion

The Kinks are one of the most under rated and under valued bands

Don't stop before Lola and Muswell Hillbillies... both are superb, especially Muswell.

Something Else... is my favorite, though. So many amazing songs on that album (David Watts, Situation Vacant, Waterloo Sunset) and not a weak moment. Singles band my ass.

The Kinks are no doubt the most under-rated band of the 60s, possibly of the whole history of popular music. Ray Davies is a tremendously awesome songwriter, and it truly hurts that he hasn't gotten the recognition he deserves.

While the rest of the big bands where writing about acid trips and Hindu scriptures The Kinks wrote about the hardships and inequality of the British society.

They are possible the best band in music history. (They share, in my opinion at the moment, the #1 place with The Beatles.)

Adore them, knew what they wrote about, yet I had never looked at it that way, comparing them to other bands of the era. Very good comment. Thank you for it.
