We all know he was named The King of Rock and Roll. Sure , it was his manager that promoted it but this thread is about who should have really had that titled instead of him.
Did I not also say that he was the hottest act in the world at the time & deserved to be called that?

Yes you did but you said that it was also just a selling point and not a provable fact.

I don't feel like he deserved it just for marketing reasons.

That's all it is though, nobody cares who you or I think really deserves it.

True but this thread is just to talk about the "what ifs" and who we do feel should get it over him.

It certainly isn't Elvis... he came along rather late in the game to claim the title of king. Besides Elvis lived long enough to become a smarmy, over paid, overweight Las Vegas lounge lizard in a white jumpsuit.

Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis were also relative late comers... besides they played piano and the "King of Rock and Roll" has to be a guitar player. (See Gavin B.'s Completely Arbitrary Rules of Rock & Roll: Statute 17:Section 42: Paragraph 5 for clarification of guitar rule)

The two most frequently mentioned "first rock and roll songs" are That's Alright Mama, (1946) by Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup and Rocket 88 (1951) - Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats (Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats was actually the Ike Turner Band playing under a pseudonym). Rocket 88 is closer to a blues boogie than rock while Rocket 88 has a full rock and roll backbeat. Neither can claim to be king for different reasons: Crudup never really had another hit record and Ike Turner met Tina and started playing R&B and soul music, leaving rock and roll behind forever.

I think it's between Bill Haley and the Comets and Chuck Berry both of whom came along early in the game and had a lot of best selling singles. Another contender would be Buddy Holly who was a late comer but he was the most talented singer, songwriter and performer of all of the first generation rock and rollers.

Maybe still having fans 35 years after dying could though.

What do you think? It's who has it - Elvis... even tho he supposedly stole ideas from black people his songs were very good and objectively I'd put him @ top 3 famous people to have ever lived.

Elvis Presley.

We have to admit that he made a big impact in the Rock N Roll scene, and was the major exponent of the genre back then, he tecnically helped to raise it to mainstream audience. Besides, has much many artists, his death inmortalized him.

He made great accomplishments, he's an icon. Even people who have never heard a song from him all his life, know who he is: The King of Rock n Roll.

Chuck Berry is well known, but amongst rock fans. People outside the sphere most likely don't know him. Elvis took most of the spotlight.
