Who deserves the title "The King of Rock and Roll"?

Who of the following three rock 'n' roll legends from the 50s deserve the title "The King of Rock and Roll"?

Elvis Presley
Chuck Berry
Little Richard

EDIT: A lot of people seem to be misunderstanding the purpose of this thread. I was talking about the 50s rock stars who have been called "The King of Rock'n'Roll", and no one else. To my knowledge no other musicians active in the 50s have been given that title.

Alfred 08-18-2008 01:45 PM

I say Elvis, because you hear way more about him then the other two. I doubt Chuck Berry or Little Richard dying would get as much of a reaction as it did when Elvis died.

But then again, Elvis died in '77.

Son of JayJamJah 08-18-2008 01:51 PM

There should be an option for all of them plus more.

Elvis is the King because they call him the King, several people should be credited though, after all it took several genres merging to create Rock and Roll. Without any of which the sum of it's collective parts would not be what it is today.

So sick of people bashing Elvis with no concept of how big his impact was.

lucifer_sam 08-18-2008 02:09 PM

Where's Fats Domino and Bo Diddley?

James Brown, Mose Allison, Ray Charles the list goes on and on.

lucifer_sam 08-18-2008 02:23 PM

Is that really rock n' roll though? I mean, I admire those guys, but I would never consider them part of rock n' roll.

I think there is a definite list, but Monkey certainly didn't cover enough.

Son of JayJamJah 08-18-2008 02:29 PM

I go back to what Rock and Roll is, an amalgamation of so many styles and genres, regardless of rather of not Mose Allison's music sounded like modern or even classic rock and roll, there is no question his influence on those who made the music we love was immense.

TheBig3 08-18-2008 02:36 PM

neither?

Does that work here?

Son of JayJamJah 08-18-2008 02:45 PM

That's a very funny observation.

Yeah but they are the more recognisable names to people on both sides of the Atlantic. Kudos to Monkey for sparking good debate.

I agree with JJJ. It's an amalgamation of many artists. Presley was a massive icon in the day and was the FACE of Rock n Roll for sure but it was a case of right time, right place for me. The artists who were really there underpinning the whole scene were your Chuck Berry's etc

The Monkey 08-19-2008 07:18 AM

I meant it to be a multiple options poll, sorry about that guys.

I wasn't aware that those two have ever been called kings of rock 'n' roll.

I admit I might've slept through some of my English classes.

WaspStar 08-19-2008 12:39 PM

I don't think the tag of "king of rock and roll" is really valid, but I think Chuck Berry is by far the greatest of the 1950's rockers, so he gets my vote.

You know that old challenge: a Martian lands on Earth and wants to know what rock and roll is. What song do you play them? Let's be honest; there's no better definition of "rock and roll" than Johnny B. Goode.

In second grade ('88) we had to design a stamp. I did one of Elvis. A few years later one came out.

lucylamppost 08-19-2008 03:25 PM

Elvis Presley because he sold his soul for rock and roll

WeeLittleHobbit 08-19-2008 07:44 PM

Of the three of them, Elvis of course. Not only was he one of the greatest impacts of rock'n'roll history, but he is already known as the King. I'd never want that to change, even if I'm not his biggest fan.

ADELE 08-19-2008 10:52 PM

King Henry VIII wrote Greensleves and he was a king!

WaspStar 08-20-2008 05:36 AM

Presley might have been the King had the Colonel not been on the scene...

Minstrel 09-01-2008 02:48 PM

Elvis and Berry are pretty hard to decide between. Chuck Berry was more innovative and more influential within music, in my opinion, but Elvis popularized the form to the public far and away the best of any early rock & roll star and was, of course, a great talent too.

boo boo 09-01-2008 08:00 PM

King Crimson? :p:

Yeah that won't work.

But this needs to be asked. Why does rock n roll need to be a mocarchy? Thats kinda lame, shouldn't it be a democracy? In which case I'd elect Elvis president, Little Richard vice president and Chuck Berry speaker of the house.

sleepy jack 09-01-2008 08:21 PM

John Lennon.

Minstrel 09-01-2008 08:30 PM

Michael Jackson is the king of pop. Let him annex rock and unify the kingdoms.

Ace 09-01-2008 08:57 PM

I saw Elvis in the grocery store last night......he needs to lose some weight.

Janszoon 09-03-2008 05:14 PM

Who should be king? Hmm... not sure but I think Ike Turner should get some credit as the father of rock 'n roll or something for writing "Rocket 88".

Zer0 09-04-2008 02:16 AM

...and was white.

Ace 09-04-2008 09:47 PM

That's not a fair statement. Hendrix was even more popular during his time (I think), so it probably came as a shock to alot of people when he died. Plus....when Obama gets shot, you'll hear ALOT about him....and Obama and Hendrix are black. Let the bitchfest begin!

This is the right answer. The only reason Chuck Berry is not the King of Rock and Roll is because of his skin colour.

Chuck berry is the real King of Rock and Roll.

zekethefreak 09-07-2008 10:26 PM

I had to put Chuck Berry down, as most of today's premier guitarists in the Rock and Roll world, consider Chuck to be one of their heroes. He has probably done more to inspire the musicians of today.

15Steps 09-07-2008 10:31 PM

Robert Plant.

Has Robert Plant ever been called "The King of Rock 'n' Roll"? This poll is about who deserves the title, out of those who have been called it.

Mordoth 09-09-2008 05:48 PM

Roger Waters.

Minstrel 09-09-2008 05:52 PM

The song-writer from Good Charlotte, whatever his name is.

sweetleaf 09-29-2008 10:19 AM

I can't deny Elvis of the title

Fyrenza 09-29-2008 11:52 AM

up until ragtime

what all kinds of music did we have?

classical

opera

folk/tribal

gospel

i cant think of any more

anyway

it was Scott Joplin that started the whole ragtime genre
(btw, ragtime was the first american genre)

which gave birth to damn near every genre we listen to today

so i vote for Scott Joplin to be King of Ragtime
(he already holds that title)

AND King of Rock & Roll :p:

Berringer 09-30-2008 04:14 PM

Chuck Berry deserves the nod from the three choices given; however as mighty as kings are...they still have to bow down to gods (Lennon and Hendrix get the double duke on that front).

DJ Phoenix 10-05-2008 02:40 AM

Only 1 "King of Rock N Roll"=ELVIS

Only 1 "King Of Pop"=MICHAEL JACKSON

No one else compares to either.

that is a bold statement you might have copied and pasted from People Online! How'd you reason this one out?
