The creation of heavy metal was more or less inevitable in the late 60's, with Cream, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix among others who brought a heavier style of blues rock into the mainstream, and thus paves way for heavy metal. It would've happened regardless of Black Sabbath.

The Beatles biggest influence was when they started putting extra sounds on a 4 track. Instead of just assigning a single sound tro each track, they were the first to try loadsa sounds on each one, on Sgt Peppers. This was revolutionary and this is what every artist after them did, without exception.

I can’t believe that I’m the only person to vote for The Who. The Who are responsible for influencing so many acts it’s unbelievable. The influence of The Who regards rock performance cannot be overstated either.
I mean off the top of my head:
First band to stack up amplifiers.
First band to use stage lighting for effect.
First band to incorporate feedback in their sound on purpose.
First band to use overdubbing. (On a theatrical multi-track recorder usually used for movie soundtracks)
I haven’t even started on stage theatrics that people still copy to this day.

The Who were also classed as the original punks and named as the major influence for most British Punks when the movement started in the 70’s. This could also be claimed for most Birtpop artists as well. You only had to look at the way Britpop bands dressed to see where their influences came from.
It shouldn’t be forgotten either that The Who were responsible for entire youth culture movements that still prevail and influence people today.
