Battle of the Bands Classic Rock/Prog/Psychedelic edition DISCUSSION THREAD

Hokai, soon the polls will start, so I find it prudent to post the brackets that we established for nominations, what I learnt for the future is that not all to many bands were supported, so a different seeding system may have to be put into place.

From the brackets of course, for each poll one band will be chosen, this will be done as such:

Each bracket will be entered into a table in access where it will be given a random number, which will be sorted from lowest to highest, with the lowest in each bracket going into the poll and so on. There will be 25 polls with 5 bands in round one with 50 proceeding, then 10 rounds with 5 bands with 20 proceeding, then 4 rounds with 5 bands with 8 proceeding, then the semi finals will be between 4 bands. How to proceed after that I don't know, it's up to you, I could take the two best of each and the highest voted for third band to have a classic five band final, or the two best of each and have a four band final, or go for a more distinct 2 band final.

WeeLittleHobbit 12-24-2008 08:41 AM

The Moody Blues are in the Beatles bracket and the Pink Floyd bracket.

Comus 12-24-2008 09:13 AM

Ah yes so they are, I'll fix that.

EDIT: Done, changed to Joe Byrd and the Field Hippies, I went through and checked the mistake and it was down to me obviously not putting "the" infront and thus not catching the duplicate.

As a further post script the seeding has been done and the random numbers allocated for each individual bracket, I won't make the information publicly available but I might start polls tonight, normally I'd run them for three days but I'm thinking to run the first three for seven days so more people will be able to vote despite the holiday period.

TheCellarTapes 12-25-2008 06:33 AM

May I congratulate you Comus for a good start with this, looking forward to Heat 4

sleepy jack 12-25-2008 08:17 AM

I'm looking forward to my bracket.

Son of JayJamJah 12-25-2008 12:22 PM

Why are all the top seeded bands in the same bracket?

Comus 12-25-2008 01:02 PM

The brackets are the seeds, I tried to explain this before but the bands in the same bracket will not be in the same heats, each heat is composed of one band from each bracket.

Son of JayJamJah 12-25-2008 07:15 PM

Perfect; I get it.

Double X 12-25-2008 07:45 PM

Great work! Seriously, I hope we (you) can go all the way through with it.

Can you make the polls public? I never understood why you would make any poll private...

Comus 12-26-2008 02:21 PM

Oh right, yeah I assumed they were immediately made public. I'll make sure they are next time around.

They live up to the bracket title. All insanely boring except Moby Grape and Leaf Hound and Gentle Giant. there's a few other's that are just okay, and I haven't heard The Pentangle.

Akira 12-26-2008 07:22 PM

^^Kids, pffft

Comus 12-26-2008 07:22 PM

The only thing in the Zep bracket that I've heard that I would consider boring is ELP, the who has some boring stuff but that's it apart from the bands I haven't heard.

Haha? Soft Machine may be one of the most interesting bands ever...plus Procol Harum and T Rex are kickass.

FaSho 12-26-2008 11:01 PM

Well their s afew good ones, but seriously, Thin Lizzy and The Monkees?

dac 12-27-2008 01:48 AM

Any early predictions? I've got The Velvet Underground winning the tourney.

Comus 12-27-2008 04:50 AM

Thin Lizzy are epic, and King Crimson will win.

Monkees are great too...just because they were a manufactured band doesn't mean they suck. They have two decent albums.

FaSho 12-27-2008 10:49 AM

King Crimso already have it wrapped up. I'm looking forward to seeing how far Gentle Giant and Jefferson Airplane will go though.

You call Faust, Wishbone Ash and Capability Brown boring.

Comus 01-01-2009 01:23 AM

Since the festive season has ended all heats will now last 3 days.

Dude, what the hell? You forgot Soft Machine!!!

FaSho 01-01-2009 09:06 PM

If Billy Joel AND Moby Grape don't make I will be pissed.

anticipation 01-01-2009 09:11 PM

is it just me, or do the sex pistols have no business being involved with this?

FaSho 01-01-2009 09:31 PM

I second questioning their inclusion.

ProggyMan 01-01-2009 10:52 PM

The Sex Pistols fit a hell of a lot better than Billy Joel...

Billy Joels finest work was in the 60's with The Lost Souls and with The Hassles and in the early 70's (ignoring Attila) with his rather marvellous solo stuff.

I think its a justifiable nomination.

In the 80's though ........:yikes:

Comus 01-02-2009 07:36 AM

Billy Joel is best known for his 70's albums Piano Man (1973), Turnstiles (1976), The Stranger (1977) and 52nd Street (1978) He was at the height of his popularity here at the end of the 70's.

Sex Pistols are a punk band.

so this isn't exclusive to classicrock/prog/psychedelic bands then?

Comus 01-02-2009 10:21 AM

The sex pistols won't get far since their fanbase is incredibly limited so I let it slide.

FaSho 01-02-2009 12:03 PM

The Stranger is one of the only albums I own that I would give a solid 10/10.

Comus 01-02-2009 04:39 PM

I find Turnstiles to be far superior.

Comus 01-04-2009 05:02 PM

Deep purple still come second in their heat despite vote tampering by second accounts, (billy joel had a discounted vote too) but now their strength is 7 not 8.

They're already playing early punk bands on the classic rock stations, so why can't they be considered classic rock on here?

Comus 01-07-2009 02:53 PM

Good point, we should keep that in mind for the next time around.

Gods some of the heats have been very tough, and it's amazing how 5 votes can be good enough to get through in one but nowhere near enough to get through in another.

Any thoughts on the running so far? I've been trying to have the next heats ready as soon as the older ones expire but today I was 7 odd hours off, sorry to anyone who was awaiting it with anticipation. Who's hooked?

TheCellarTapes 01-07-2009 03:01 PM

I love it.

FaSho 01-07-2009 04:00 PM

I love it. Wish Billy or Leaf Hound or Moby Grape made it :/
Hopefully Fifty Foot Hose will help me regain faith in the system.

Comus 01-07-2009 04:04 PM

The thing is, no matter how much you want it to happen, the obscure bands just won't get through, and as for Billy Joel, that was just tough luck.

ProggyMan 01-07-2009 07:15 PM

I'm hooked.

Comus 01-07-2009 10:58 PM

What I find incredibly interesting is the difference in interest between the heats, some have far more votes than others.
