PPP (Po's Psychedelic Playlist.)

Thought I would share with you guys some of my favourite psychedelic music and how it has shaped me as a person and how it made me take up art.

Here we go. First psychedelic music that truly absorbed me was contemporary psychedelic music all the way from Australia.

TAME IMPALA

Now I don't usually say this about music, EVER, but this album changed my life I think. It made me see things differently, like someone taking acid for the first time, I never saw things the same again after hearing this music.
These guys took me down the multicoloured path of psychedelic music I am currently down. And led to me taking up art without ever doing it in school. The singer of the band even got to see my art which was so inspired by his beautiful music.

I was really led to Tame Impala through MGMT, when I heard of them supporting them while in America.

I started listening to the Beatles properly then.THE BEATLES-Tomorrow never knows(alternate version) - YouTube

I was even surprised to find good psychedelic music coming from Ireland with My Bloody Valentine.

And of course a number of bands from the mid to late 60's in America who were essentially the pioneers of this form of music.

Love - Red Telephone
My Bloody Valentine - Sometimes - YouTube

Country Joe and the Fish - Grace

PoorOldPo 01-07-2012 12:29 PM

Ultimate Spinach - Mind Flower

The Youngbloods - Darkness Darkness

THE YOUNGBLOODS - Darkness Darkness - YouTube

Buffalo Springfield - Expecting to Fly

Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit

Court of the Crimson King - Crimson King

Another band that really caught my attention about 2 years ago were the Chameleons, with one song in particular. These guys are from England in the 80's and were incredibly underrated.

This is probably one of my favourite songs.
The Chameleons - View From a Hill

Another from England is Mark Fry, who came out with a beautiful album in 1972 and is now considered a psych folk classic.

Mark Fry - The Witch

And believe it or not, Radiohead.

Radiohead - Bloom

radiohead- bloom - YouTube

Anyway, while some of you might question some of the stuff I consider here to be psychedelic, for me, they are. The music I picked might not necessarily fit in with the strict frame of what psychedelic music is supposed to be ( at least some of it ) I picked it because of how it makes me feel and what I see [/CENTER]when I listen to it and immese myself.

This is quite a large post, will look over it and check if I have made any silly mistakes.
Please feel free to add to my list.

Love Po.

The Byrds

^ That`s an impressive collection of music, and some great photos too. Are the paintings below the Tame Impala clip yours ? I particularly liked the forest of white columns right at the bottom.

If you like Eight Miles High, you should try to track down the 16-minute live version on the Byrds Untitled album. Once you`ve heard that version, every time you hear the pop-single one you`ll think to yourself, "Why have they stopped playing before the good bit ?" It has, among other things, an excellent and unusual bass guitar solo.

For The Byrds, for what it matters, I would really pick The Notorious Byrd Brothers. I've strongly argued against My Bloody Valentine elsewhere on this forum, though some certainly didn't like that lol.

someonecompletelyrandom 02-03-2012 09:10 AM

Wow, this is nice stuff. I know virtually nothing about psychedelic records. This stuff is both groovy and far-out. It's like, seriously freakin me out man.

Unknown Soldier 02-03-2012 09:27 AM

Hey there is lot of very good stuff on your list especially the Love, Jefferson Airplane and Country Joe and the Fish stuff. The two Country Joe and the Fish albums Electric Music For the Mind and Body and I-Feel-Like-I`m-Fixin-to-Die are imo two of the best psychedelic albums ever. The Jefferson Airplane albums of Surrealistic Pillow, After Bathing at Baxter`s, Crown of Creation and Volunteers are four gems.

The Byrds albums Fifth Dimension and Younger Than Yesterday are probably their two best.

starrynight 02-03-2012 10:45 AM

Well Buffalo Springfield Again and Forever Changes are 2 of my favourite albums ever.

Checking these guys out right as we speak.

PoorOldPo 02-05-2012 07:59 AM

These guys are some contemporary psych folk. I think this stuff came out around the 2006 mark. Lol, they kind of dissapeared because they no longer believe in the internet.

Very nice selection that you have hear. A nice psychadellic tip: whenever there's a page with a lot of youtube music selections on it, make every song play at once and see how they coincide.
Have you checked out United States of America, Po? They are most definitely my favourite psychadellic band.

PoorOldPo 02-05-2012 12:41 PM

OMG thats an amazing friggin idea!

will check out this band you speak of and report back!

By god you're a genius! Just tried that with this page we are on and it was ****ing fantastic! haha! the songs all moved in and out of each other! definetly doing this next time I blaze up!

Wanna blaze up? Check this out:

Around the same time as Spacemen 3 (Early 90's), this is hypnotic. I was around 18 when I saw these live in a backwater venue with around 50 others but that was one special night!

I've liked Love Song For The Dead Che since the 90s, but the rest of the album didn't convince me.

That was beautiful, thanks for sharing that man.

blastingas10 02-08-2012 10:38 AM

Nice selection, pooroldpo, especially with buffalo Springfield. I saw them last summer at bonnaroo, amazing show, best I've ever seen in my life, and Ive seen quite a bit of shows. Also, country Joe and the fish are great. "electric music for the body and soul" is one of the greatest psychedelic albums ever.

Goofle 02-08-2012 11:44 AM

Great thread mate. I wish there was more psychedelic Hip Hop around, but this track is one of the best I have heard.
