Zappa is great at what he does which is a very free form type of thing. It works most of the time but that solo has more clams in it than a New England seafood platter. Not to mention his intonation is terrible in places.

Not at all. But it's really not fair to compare Page, Santana, Clapton, Iommi, Hendrix, Beck, etc. to guys who came afterwards and took the technicality of guitar playing to ridiculous heights.

No! You should always compare the guys after to the guys before. That's how we create a standard and then raise the standard. If we say, "that's unfair comparison" then that guitarist can't get the criticism he needs to reach the same level as guys like hendrix and santana.
