I can`t beleive this once great band have not had a thread about them yet.

I`m currently listening to their Draw The Line album for the first time in years & it`s an absolutly stonking album. Raw production full of drug addled funk with Tyler on top form screeching out the lyrics. In fact i`d go as far as saying that anyone who calls themselves a fan of rock music that the mid 70s Aerosmith trilogy of Toys In The Attic/Rocks/Draw The Line should be mandatory listening.

Listening to those albums just make me so sad that today we have that sad parody of a band going around singing syrupy Diane Warren ballads.

Wow, I cant believe we left out an Aerosmith thread... Awesome awesome band, Steven Tyler is an effing legend... Havent listened to them in a while though, I should go dig out some albums...

I don't much care for them. I think they have been around too long. Sometimes, things should just die... :bonkhead:

They should have given it up years ago , but don`t let that put you off their 70s stuff coz it`s ****ing awesome.

^ Well, thats mainly what I mean. But just the fact that they have been around so long (and so much), is kinda a turn off for me. Your right though, older stuff shouldnt be dismissed.

They`re the only band that I can think of who`s decline in quality over the past 20 years matches Stevie Wonderesque proportions

i was thinking of making this thread....i think this is a heavy example of blues with rock music. Great band (in my opinion) young lust just makes me wanna drum my heart out. Urban (and others) what would you say is your fave song of theirs?

There`s this little known track off the Draw The Line album called 'The Hand That Feeds'

They were so much better Back then. What most people consider to be old Aerosmith (Done with Mirrors, Permanent Vacation) is actually the beginning of their decline into ubiquitous mediocrity. I'll give them credit for keepin' on, but Steven Tyler should hang up his lips and call it a career by now.

I most likely wouldnt buy any of their albums, but that is due to the fact I discovered a few in my basement the other day.

I love Aerosmith. They're one of those bands that can mix songs, like do a rock song, then do like a funk tune. I love 'Angel' and 'Dream on' they were great. I think they get forgotten allot coz obviously there were bigger things to come from the 70's. But they're musics great just good old fashioned rock. I had a friend that was a massive rap fan and went to see Run DMC live. He said Tyler and Perry stuck their heads through the stage curtain and the other band members followed (as guest stars) and rocked the sh!t outta them. As he put it 'the grizzly old guys knew what they were doing, Run DMC didn't have to be there.'

THE URBAN GUIDE TO AEROSMITH`S ALBUMS

Aerosmith - 1973
Decent enough start to their career if not a little unspectacular. You can really hear the Rolling Stones influence on this album.The stand out track is obviously Dream On (Which actually flopped when it came out , it wasn`t a hit until it`s re-release in 1976).There`s also Mama Kin which has been in their live show forever & a solid cover of Rufus Thomas`s Walkin The Dog. There`s not really any bad tracks on this album , it`s just there`s nothing really great either & the flat production lets it down a little also.But on the whole worth listening to.

Get Your Wings - 1974

This is probably Aerosmiths most druggy album , some of the tracks almost verge into stoner rock. Most notably Spaced & Lord Of The Thighs.Highlights for me on this album for me are Same Old Song & Dance , which is one of my favourite album openers ever & also Seasons Of Wither which is the best ballad Aerosmith ever wrote , Dream On INCLUDED. The rest of the album is filled up with high quality rockers like SOS (Too Bad) & Pandoras Box , not to mention a decent cover of the Yardbirds Train Kept A Rollin.

Toys In The Attic - 1975

Ahh now we`re talking , this album is a landmark in 70s rock & deservedly so. The title track to start the album doesn`t so much begin as crashes in & doesn`t give up until the final song on the album , the slow & tender 'you see me crying'. What can I tell you about this album , you all know Walk This Way & Sweet Emotion. Adams Apple & Uncle Salty are wonderful mid paced rock songs with great hooks & then there`s Big 10" Record , a blues parody complete with a Steven Tyler harmonica solo. Not a bad track on this album , and thats said having first heard it & listened to regually almost every month for almost 15 years

Rocks - 1976

When asked by a journalist why this album was titled 'Rocks' Tyler replied with 'Because it does' , and he`s not bloody kidding either.This is Toys In The Attic part 2 but with a dirtier , nastier Aerosmith.This is probably Aerosmiths heaviest album. This album is pure sex (Lick & a Promise , Combination) drugs (Sick as a dog ) & Rock n Roll (Get The Lead Out).Added to that the white boy funk of Last Child & the low down dirtyness of Rats In The Cellar , and you`re in for a hell of an album. Essential.

Draw The Line - 1977

This my friends is MY personal favourite Aerosmith album.The recording of it was filled with drug fuelled arguements between Tyler & Perry & the whole tone of the album is full of bitterness.The album itself is the rawest the band have ever put out, it`s rough & uneasy but to me it compliments the lyrics & the tone of the band.Highlights on this album are the title track (With some nice slide guitar from Joe Perry) Kings & Queens is another ballad that I think is much much better than Dream On. If you are in any doubt of the tensions in the band at the time you only have to listen to Steven Tylers lyrics of the song 'I Wanna Know Why (Another album highlight) to see exactly what it was like. Joe Perry gets his first vocal appearence on Bright Light Fright , And then there`s the Hand That Feeds , a forgotten gem of a song long since forgotten about but ultimatley my favourite Aerosmith song ever.A lot of critics said that this was the start or Aerosmiths decline.The cracks were there but it hadn`t really affected the quality of the music yet.

Night In The Ruts - 1979

Oh dear , this is where it started going a bit wrong. Perry & Whitford left the band shortly after this album was completed. To be honest there`s really only 2 songs on this album worth bothering with & thats the opener No Surprise & the 2nd track Chiquita (with it`s full brass section). Other than that the rest of the album isn`t that spectacular, the filler tracks sound exactly like fillers & their cover of the Shangri-Las' "Remember (Walking in the Sand), is just an embaressment.There`s also a cover of The Yardbirds song Think About It , but I don`t even remember that.

Rock In A Hard Place - 1982

With Perry & Whitford gone & with Tyler in a bad motorcycle accident & badly hooked on drugs many people thought the band would split , but somehow Tyler managed to get Jimmy Crespo and Rick Dufay to join the band & somehow make this album , and to be honest it`s not that bad. There`s some great songs on this usually forgotten album.The first 2 tracks Jailbait , Lightning Strikes are uptempo rockers worthy of the band in their mid 70s peak, The Aerosmith funk returns in the songs Bolivian Ragamuffin & Jig Is Up and there`s the wonderful ballad Joanie`s Butterfly, possibly one of Aerosmiths most overlooked songs.

though i have to say Dream On is one of the best songs i have ever heard, to bad was the one of the few i like anymore

Favorite Songs would be Dream On, Sweet Emotion, Walk This Way {Live}, Crazy and Janies Got A Gun.

Wonderful band. Good for road-trips and Barbeques.

Are you saying that their style of music changed or something? I mean, I like them no matter what decade their music is from. I've always loved their older music and their sorta new stuff too. In fact, I remember first hearing "Jaded" on the radio years ago. I wasn't into the song at first, but I had a dream featuring that song in there later. Since then, my feelings for this song has persuaded me to like the guitar parts and the singing. I dunno. What do you guys think of this song?

I think Aerosmith were one of the best rock n roll bands in the world, at least until they did those 3 ballads that dispite different titles were still the same exact song.

I said before, there are two Aerosmiths, and two sets of Aerosmith fans. The old Aerosmith, my preference, had 5-6 gritty, hook-laden, lyrically slick albums from 73 until about 84 or so.

All great, American rock and roll albums.

Then came Perry & Whitford quitting, a couple of ok albums, with a couple of good songs on each. Then came sobriety, Perry and Whitford return, then the death knell, MTV/Run DMC.

Aerosmith went from good, crunchy rock and roll to passable, predictable, formulaic top 40 records. They've had their moments, though. A few good songs here and there, but mostly nondescript blah offal.

I did, however, like Jaded, the first time I heard it.

I don't know if they just got fat on the corporate dollar, just ran out of steam, or what, but they don't have the grit they had before. Of course, they are 25 years older now, as well. Maybe they've just mellowed.

Dream on, Angel, & I don't want to miss a thing are excellent songs, Steve still has the pipes :)

Oh, where to begin. I really like Aerosmith from the seventies. I have Rocks on vinyl, and It is quite an enjoyable listen. In my opinion, they really did fade in the later 80's.Oh i forgot to tell you guys, that durning my vacation, I saw Steven, and Joe in Boston.
