Default Classic Rock Tally

A tally list to discover Music Banter's greatest rock n roll band of all time!!!

This is how it works, you list your 10 favourite classic rock bands of all time in order from first to tenth and they are given points for their rankings.

Example:

1) The Police (10 points)
2) Fleetwood Mac (9 points)
3) Pink Floyd (8 points)
4) U2 (7 points)
5) Blondie (6 points)
6) Neil Young (5 points)
7) The Smiths (4 points)
8) Heart (3 points)
9) Rolling Stones (2 points)
10) Tom Petty (1 point)

Rules!!! A couple of rules in order to make this work.

1) No heavy metal or underground punk bands. I'll permit Black Sabbath & hard rock bands like AC/DC, Guns N Roses, KISS, as well as commercially successful band like the Sex Pistols and Nirvana but that's it.

No Metallica! If I start to open the door to bands like Slayer and the Dead Kennedys I can just see this list dissolving into heavy metal/punk land, especially in this forum

2) It has to be a well known commercially successful band from the 60's 70's 80's or 90's. I like the Violent Femmes and Fun Lovin Criminals but they would be considered alternative.

The Smiths, Pearl Jam, Chilies on the other hand were all successful big classic rock names. The best barometer would be to ask yourself does this band get classic rock radio play

3) You can count an artists solo or other band achievements into their work. For instance I considered the songs Neil Young sung with Crosby Stills & Nash and Buffalo Springfield, and Stevie Knicks early solo work into my equation.

If this fly's I'll tally the totals periodically after I have... say five responses., cheers

Do Simon and Garfunkel, David Bowie, Billy Joel, and The Beach Boys count as classic rock bands?

I didn't list Bowie because he's one guy and not a band. If I may list Bowie, then I'll edit my list to include solo acts.

I think that rule no. 2 allows for solo artists.

Tom Petty is on the example list. I think you're safe.

All right, here we go.
  1. The Beatles
  2. David Bowie
  3. Billy Joel
  4. Simon and Garfunkel
  5. The Beach Boys
  6. Supertramp
  7. The Doors
  8. The Smiths
  9. The Cars
  10. Roxy Music
I hear all except The Smiths and Roxy Music on classic rock radio regularly. Those two just don't get airplay in Canada (except on CBC), it seems.

I am going to stick to strictly groups, bands.

1. Beatles
2. Rolling Stones
3. Jefferson Airplane
4. Doors
5. Beach Boys
6. Crosby, Stills,Nash, and Young
7. The Band
8 The Animals.
9 Cream
10. Led Zeppelin

I decided not to include my favorite, the Grateful Dead, because they more than just a rock band, too eclectic. They are American roots music. Likewise the Byrds/Flying Burrito Brothers.

All right the tally so far...

1. The Beatles (29 points)
2. Pink Floyd (22 points)
3. David Bowie (17 points)
4. Rolling Stones (16 points)
5. Doors (15 points)
6. Led Zeppelin (12 points)
7. Fleetwood Mac (12 points)
8. Beach Boys (12 points)
9. The Police (11 points)
10. Cream (10 points) Three way tie, took the band that was chosen more than once.

Eclectic mix, surprisingly no votes yet for AC/DC the Cure, Nirvana or the Clash.
