Van Halen or Van Hagar?

Who's got your vote and why??

Oriphiel 07-16-2017 04:29 PM

Van Morrison

OccultHawk 07-16-2017 04:29 PM

Camper Van Beethoven

Chula Vista 07-16-2017 04:33 PM

Van Hagar. Better songs. Less of DLR's ridiculous attempts at being a legit lead singer.

Van Halen has always been a pop band trying to disguise itself as hard rock just because of Eddie's chops.

One of my fave VH songs of all time.

OccultHawk 07-16-2017 04:36 PM

Really?

My fave DLR VH song.

And nice ripping off of John Bonham's prop with the flaming gong at the end.

Have I told ya'll how I've spent time with both Eddie and Alex (for a couple of hours) and Michael (for about 10 minutes)?

*again, memory fading so forgive me*

Except Van Hagar are dull garbage with songs fit for a dentist's waiting room.

Some of Eddie's most cohesive stuff though. Those songs fit those times perfectly.

Pet. You nailed me. I wish I'd still be alive when you are 57. :-)

That is not a compliment.

There are a couple good songs from the Hagar era but the only good albums are from the Roth era.

OccultHawk 07-17-2017 10:18 AM

I'm astonished by Chula's opinion. I loved Van Halen has a kid. I was even in their official fan club. I don't even accept the Van Hagar stuff as part of their discography.

This is how I feel about it as well, but like everyone Chula is entitled to his (IMO wrong) opinion

Chula Vista 07-17-2017 10:30 AM

Best song and video VH ever produced IMO.

I agree that it's probably their best video, and I like the song a lot but it's not my favorite song by them.

You are a very sentimental person.

Trollheart 07-17-2017 12:07 PM

I feel it's hard not to like this song. DLR is a fun guy (no mushroom jokes please)

and this one just for the video - and also because it's a riot

OccultHawk 07-17-2017 12:19 PM

The Hot for Teacher main guitar hook sounds a lot like when ZZ Top was really great.

Yeah, that's a great ZZ Top song.

Frownland 07-17-2017 02:51 PM

You're all wrong. Sherone Halen for life.

It's their most extreme album.

They're from Boston. I wonder if they're the hit crew Chula warned you about.

Ba-da-boom.

Frownland 07-17-2017 03:09 PM

I guess I'd go with original Van Halen since it has all the cool instrumental parts that make up the extent of my enjoyment of the group: the drum intro to Hot for Teacher, Spanish Fly, Cathedral, and to a lesser extent Eruption.

OccultHawk 07-17-2017 03:16 PM

Cathedral
That could've been the foundation for a really cool ambient drone record.

Matthew21 09-27-2017 04:51 PM

Yeah, I got to say Hagar. He's the better singer and the better frontman. The stuff from the Hagar era was just better all around. With Roth they sounded more like a bunch of college guys playing at a kegger, with Hagar they sounded like a real band that had grown up and improved.

Neapolitan 09-27-2017 06:31 PM

Roth =VH= had the better songs.

With Roth they sounded like a fun rock band. With Hagar they sounded like bog standard cheesy 80s dad rock.

With Roth they sounded like a bunch of little kids, with Hagar they had grown up musically, and sounded much better. It was an actual growth, Roth's return sounds more like a devolution. Everything seemed to improve, the vocals actually rocked, instead of Roth's cheezy bragging, and Eddie's guitar actually sounded more complex and rythmic.
Hagar is a rock singer, while I must agree with Eddie when he basically called Roth a dance singer.

Frownland 09-28-2017 03:26 PM

Compromise: They were exciting albeit annoying kids with Roth who turned into boring old farts with Hagar in the name of forced maturity.

PinkCigarette 10-07-2017 08:33 PM

Van Halen, Runnin' with the Devil is one of the greatest songs ever. I hated Sammy.

OccultHawk 10-07-2017 10:50 PM

It really is a bad ass thrilling song. I love it from the first note.
