Van Hagar. Better songs. Less of DLR's ridiculous attempts at being a legit lead singer.

Van Halen has always been a pop band trying to disguise itself as hard rock just because of Eddie's chops.

Except Van Hagar are dull garbage with songs fit for a dentist's waiting room.

Some of Eddie's most cohesive stuff though. Those songs fit those times perfectly.

There are a couple good songs from the Hagar era but the only good albums are from the Roth era.

I'm astonished by Chula's opinion. I loved Van Halen has a kid. I was even in their official fan club. I don't even accept the Van Hagar stuff as part of their discography.

This is how I feel about it as well, but like everyone Chula is entitled to his (IMO wrong) opinion

Best song and video VH ever produced IMO.

I agree that it's probably their best video, and I like the song a lot but it's not my favorite song by them.

The Hot for Teacher main guitar hook sounds a lot like when ZZ Top was really great.

I guess I'd go with original Van Halen since it has all the cool instrumental parts that make up the extent of my enjoyment of the group: the drum intro to Hot for Teacher, Spanish Fly, Cathedral, and to a lesser extent Eruption.

That could've been the foundation for a really cool ambient drone record.

Yeah, I got to say Hagar. He's the better singer and the better frontman. The stuff from the Hagar era was just better all around. With Roth they sounded more like a bunch of college guys playing at a kegger, with Hagar they sounded like a real band that had grown up and improved.

Roth =VH= had the better songs.

With Roth they sounded like a fun rock band. With Hagar they sounded like bog standard cheesy 80s dad rock.

With Roth they sounded like a bunch of little kids, with Hagar they had grown up musically, and sounded much better. It was an actual growth, Roth's return sounds more like a devolution. Everything seemed to improve, the vocals actually rocked, instead of Roth's cheezy bragging, and Eddie's guitar actually sounded more complex and rythmic.
Hagar is a rock singer, while I must agree with Eddie when he basically called Roth a dance singer.

Compromise: They were exciting albeit annoying kids with Roth who turned into boring old farts with Hagar in the name of forced maturity.

Van Halen, Runnin' with the Devil is one of the greatest songs ever. I hated Sammy.

It really is a bad ass thrilling song. I love it from the first note.
