Latin American Old Rock
Hi guys! I needed to open this thread so bad... So I'll be posting latin rock in the range of 60's-80's, comprising all forms of rock really. Please contribute with your favorites! Enjoy :yeah:
|
Novos Baianos from Brazil, were awarded as the best album in Brazilian music history: "Acabou Chorare". A work rich in stories and legends.
Another great piece from Brazil is "Clube da Esquina", I also recommend checking out its story. I was revolutionary for Brazilian music at the time. Finally "Artaud" by Pecado Rabioso, featuring the legend Luis Spinetta, this is considered the best Argentinian album ever. And among my all-time favorites as well. |
I might as well start this off with a bang! Some high-octane 60's garage rock from Lima, Peru...
Los Saicos - Demolición (1965) |
Here's another garage-rock favorite of mine. Los Doltons with their song about Robert "Birdman of Alcatraz" Stroud...
Los Doltons - El Hombre Pájaro de Alcatraz |
Ritchie Valens was one of the greatest in early Rock and Roll. His life was cut so short and there isn't much material left by him. However he did make it on the silver screen, and there is a biopic about him. I've seen it over two dozen times.
Ritchie Valens - Ooh My Head Los Lobos - La Bamba I watch a doc on Spanish Rock, and they didn't include Herb Alpert. Which I think is a shame. Even though he isn't Mexican, and he describes his band as "Four lasagnas, two bagels, and an American cheese." he did help popularize Mariachi music. When you think of it, Herb Alpert was a hit machine in the 60s on par with Motown and The Beatles and he did it was Mariachi music. Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass - Spanish Flea Martinez appears in the Alan Freed movie, "Rock Around the Clock." He might not be considered "Latin American Old Rock" but he was seen by Rock n Roll fans at the time. Tony did three songs for the move. I could only find one video: "Cuero." Tony Martinez and His Band - Cuero I can only describe this next song as Progressive Rock Exotica. Yma Sumac was billed as a Peruvian princess. There was a conspiracy theory that she was really Jewish, from Brooklyn and her real name was Amy Camus. El Condor Pasa (Original) - YMA SUMAC (1971) |
More Peruvian rock...
Los Holy's - Campo de Vampiros |
|
^^^ w.o.w. didn't know Peru had great rock like those, I'm gonna dig more into peruvian old music, thanks for posting!
Os Mutantes from Brazil. One of Kurt Cobain inspirations as he stated once. |
Eartha Kitt introducing the band. (Eartha played Catwoman in the 60s TV series Batman.)
Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66 |
In 1969, Walo Carillo, the drummer for Los Holy's, left the group and helped to create another Peruvian rock group "Telegraph Avenue"...
Telegraph Avenue - Rocking' Rock (The Girls from Oklahoma) And after leaving Telegraph Avenue, in the early 1970's, he went on to help create yet another Peruvian rock group "Tarkus"... Tarkus - El Pirata (1972) |
Here's another one of my favorite bands. This song is from a Chilean group known for their heavy psych-rock sound, with Carlos Corales on guitar and his wife Denise on vocals...
Aguaturbia - E.V.O.L. (1970) Quote:
|
Los Belkings of Peru with "El Guasón"...
Los Belkings - El Guasón |

From Los Angeles, California. Latino punk band "The Plugz" with their debut album...
|
Here's the fantastic third album from another of my favorites. Peruvian psych-rock group "Traffic Sound"...
|
Here's a good one from Nicaragua. The debut album from "Bwana" showing a noticeable nod to Santana in the music...
|
Debut and only album. Nice.
|
And here's the debut album by another one of my favorite groups, "Los Dug Dug's" from Durango, Mexico...
|
|
I mentioned a song by this Peruvian band in a previous post but here's their debut album in its entirety...
They sound like they were listening to a lot of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple at the time. |
Here's the debut and only album from a Mexican group called "Peace and Love."
The original album cover was a rather boring, uninspired aerial picture of a crowd at an outdoor festival. This album cover photo is from the re-released version which was taken from the inside of the original album's cover. They sound sort of like a cross between Santana and Chicago... |
Here's a Mexican group with a noticeable Jethro Tull influence in their music. The debut album from "Nuevo Mexico"...
|
The third and final album from Chilean group "Blops" which was self-titled like both of their previous albums. Re-released on CD (with a different album cover) as "Locomotora" in 2001. Psychedelic rock with jazz, folk, and prog blended in. |
Cutest Brazilian music ever, guaranteed to melt the coldest heart
Latin Blood A song by Gil when he was exiled in London |
Various - Instrumentales Chilenos De Los 60's Compilation of various Chilean instrumental rock/surf rock groups of the 1960's. |
The third studio album by "Invisible" from Argentina. Founded by guitarist and vocalist Luis Alberto Spinetta after the demise of "Pescado Rabioso"...
Invisible - Invisible (1974) |
The second and last album from Peruvian musician Enrique Roberto Tellería Dávila (Jean Paul "El Troglodita") which was originally released in 1973. Some songs sound quite a bit like Arthur Lee, some remind me of Paul McCartney, with an occasional bit of funk here and there. |
Here's a single from a Peruvian psych-rock group "El Opio" (The Opium) with their song "Una Bruja en el Cusco" (A Witch in Cusco). They released some singles but never an album during their time together.
El Opio - Una Bruja en el Cusco (1973) |
Here's a psychedelic tune from the great "Los Destellos" of Peru...
Los Destellos - Onsta la yerbita |

They're actually really cooool
|
^ One of the best groups to ever come out of Peru (or anywhere else.) Their entire discography is worth looking into. Especially their late 60's to mid 70's albums.
Los Destellos There's also a great compilation of their more psychedelic tunes called "Sicodélicos" that was released in 2016... Los Destellos - Sicodélicos |
The debut and only album from "Climax" a heavy psych/prog group from Bolivia...
Climax - Gusano Mecanico (1974) |
The debut and only album from psych/prog rock group "El Ritual" out of Mexico...
El Ritual - El Ritual (1971) |
Sorry because some of them got pretty lo fi with time.

Mautner's classic "Maracatu Atômico". Besides the music, I also love the cover artwork. Moraes Moreira (Novos Baianos lead vocalist) in the beginnings of his solo work |
La Fachada de Piedra - The Stone Facade 1971-1974 A compilation album of songs from a Mexican rock group that released two EP's but no full length albums during their time together. |
Another album from a Mexican group. "Grupo Ciruela" with their debut and only album "Regreso Al Origen." They sound like they were influenced by the likes of Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, and Jethro Tull...
Grupo Ciruela - Regreso al Origen (1973) |
The second album from "Los Antiques" a Miami Cuban-American rock band, active from the late 60's to mid 70's. A noticeable Santana influence running throughout the LP. |
