Avatar didn't do that though, it didn't use 3D simply to throw stuff at you but to make you feel like you're really sucked into the environment, and it worked.

I wouldn't call it brilliant in a storytelling context, but certainly in terms of visuals and technical achievement.
It's the most convincing and immersive use of CGI since the original Jurassic...
