tell me where i am slipping up

i have a bit of a problem. When I write a song, I have the beat in my head for it. I then write the words of the song along the beat, and then the words often become second place to the beat. This is a big problem for me. If you look at one of the songs I have wrote (My punk Romance) in my head that sounds really good, with a good beat, but as always the beats overshadows it and lyrically it fails. This is not because I am a bad lyricist. Poems I have written in the past have been given great praise and one has even been published. So then-what is going wrong? I'm a good lyricist and the backing beats that I create are good and catchy. But when I put the 2 together something always ends up going wrong. Please help me.

You could try getting the beats down, with the rough lyrics and tunes and then completely re-working the lyrics and tune. The hardest part about writing lyrics is probably finding your starting point/theme and a hook to go with it. If you've already got these then reworking, reworking and reworking would be your best bet.

the only thing is I haven't got any tools to get the beat down. usually when i rework the lyrics the beat gets messed up. I have tried to do what you have said, getting my rough lyrics down and then the beat, then reworking the lyrics over this. but then it just ends up in a jumbled mess and what was a good beat and bad lyrics ends up in good lyrics with a bad beat. i am pretty good at each thing individually, but when i join them together they seem to get messed up. this is really important to me to get this right as it is what i would like to follow as a career. anyway, thanks for the help. by the way-i come from birmingham in england. where abouts do you live?

Try this....get some lyrics in your head first, then do a beat for the lyrics...it's kind of like what you're doing, but backwards...

Hey, it might work.

Haha, you don't have to do all that, now get up off your knees, you're fine.
