I'm inclined to say that anything overused in a piece becomes cliche and unpleasant to listen to. I think writers can get away with one, but I really don't like to hear many more than that, and I do prefer to see the metaphor carried on with. I don't think very highly of similes, to be honest.

Honestly though, similes are fine just as long as they are used every once in awhile on a rare occasion.
