Well, this is what I did and they're satisfied. I hate it but... hopefully just that small bit in the incidental music will be emough, because I really don't want to use that theme again, at least not so blatantly.

Having arranged for my collegiate a cappella group, I feel your pain. Arranging and composing are difficult tasks, and they require so much back knowledge in theory that (to be honest, even most musicians) take for granted. I've gotten into arranging commercially for a few local groups (and adopting a "don't ask don't tell" policy on copyrights...), and it's hard to explain what a difficult process it is.

I have an ex-girlfriend who currently arranges for a partial living in addition to gigging as a classical and pop vocalist, who would pop out a cappella arrangements of anything you can think of in under 10 hours. She frankly averaged 5-6 for most of the tunes she did. The weren't simple arrangements, they were complicated music. She has an insanely skilled ear.

With regards to working for the in-laws, I've been there. I can't count the number of unpaid gigs I've played for in-laws.

Long story short, composing and arranging suck to live on. They're ridiculous amounts of fun, but I've gotten to a point of composing exclusively for fun (I write string quartet when I've had a bad day).

Oh no, I have a firm grasp of theory and have no problems composing or arrangements.

However, writing a chorale symphony IS a major pain even for the pros.

I was essentially asked to write words for a three section chorus and adapt a ballet into a chorale symphony for novice (at best) vocalists.

If it were a capella or a soloist, no problem, but this? I, and the one making the commission, don't know the size of the chorus... so that just adds another layer, all for a steak dinner.

Edit: you could just write random crap and call it Schönberg Obviously not do-able for a primary/secondary chorus.

Yeah, I was looking more at Stravinsky and Mahler for influence (obviously the size od all things divided in half).

I am about to give up on having equal representation and just go with the symphony as accompaniment durig vocala and ornate between vocals.

In what medium? I also get requests for oil paintings and then they expect it done in two weeks for $100! I mean it takes at least one month to paint it the way they want it, not to mention up to 6 months to dry. And usually the size they want in canvas alone would be $250, not including the paint. Just to break even on one in particular, I estimated $1,200 and that was only the cost of materials.

People really have no idea what this kind of work takes. I don't even do commissions. When people ask, I say no. The only reason I took this one is because of the in-laws.
