I agree with your statement, to me Sam Cooke is the overall best though.

Of course! I would kill to have that guy's worth ethics and vocals.

I don't know if this just me or my pretentious ass-y-ness speaking but I hate when people mistake "Another Saturday Night" to be Cat Stevens' original. It kind of pisses me off.

Sam Cooke to me is one of those singers who can sing with a real voice (not insanely polished) but also still hit notes. Someone wrote once, of John Lennon, that he could scream in key. Similarly, I think Cooke came without the "errors-are-bad" mentality that too many singers have today.

Maybe it lends itself to the production from then and now. But maybe with Cooke it was about the work put in, and not the finished product. To make another comparison, Sting once said of (and I'm making the dates up here) an '86 concert in Chicago that it was the best the Police could ever hope to play. I think Cooke has a similar ability to be aware of his own position in a performance. He has an almost supernatural ability to go for the right note and that's a rare gift.

Soul especially seemed to be more comfortable then working through a song. Calling things out in the middle of the song, leaving them in, and knowing that people didn't give a **** if instructions to the bad made the album.

^Bang on, Big3.

There's an old Soul saying..."It's what's in the groove that counts".

One of my top 10 favorite male vocalists. I wish there were more soul/R&B singers like him performing these days.
Unfortunately, he died too young and under tragic circumstances.

Sam Cooke is not only the King of Soul, but I personally rank him as the greatest singer of all-time. His voice is powerful yet sweet and haunting. There will never be another.

For Sam Cooke fans, I HIGHLY recommend Sam Cooke: Portrait of a Legend - 1951-1964. Has 31 songs ranging from his popular radio sensations to some hidden gems. One of my favorite albums I own.

Some of my favorites of his were:

- Bring It On Home
- Just For You
- Sad Mood
- Good Times
- Twisting the Night Away
- Meet Me At Mary's Place
- Win Your Love For Me
- A Change Is Gonna Come
- Chain Gang
- Nothing Can Change This Love
- Touch the Hem of His Garment
- That's Where It's At
- What A Wonderful World
- I'll Come Running Back To You
- Cupid
- Lovable
- I'll Come Running Back To You
- Another Saturday Night
- I Love You (For Sentimental Reasons)
- You Send Me
- Only Sixteen
