This was a hard choice but I am going with Motown.
I grew up on Motown. I grew up on the others as well but the Motown sound will always have a special place in my heart. I think that Stax obviously has the edge and was less polished. However, I feel Motown has more recognizable classics and their "sound" defined an era and made more of an cultural impact. Also, they are not as overproduced as some here have suggested. I can pull out some songs that rival Stax gritty sound. I guess it all boils down to preference but I enjoy both very much! |

Stax has that southern grit! They have the real raw soul sound. Motown definitely has a huge fan base and commands a ton of respect but it seemed so polished and processed it has more of a plastic soul vibe to me
